(ABC Riverland: Jackson Byrne)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The native bushes, the flowers and the birds that they bring are just really good for the soul.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The decision to revitalise the riverfront property was an easy one for Ms Townsend, but she recognised the fortunate situation they were in to be able to make such a sacrifice compared to others nearby.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The decision to remove the vines was probably not as hard as what it has been for some other local growers,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Her 61-year-old husband said one of the driving factors in returning the site to native vegetation, rather than transitioning to another crop, was the potential return of the endangered regent parrot.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A medium sized plant blooming with pink flowers.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/d0388256e5eeb5287dfe239000b44348.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Flowers are blooming four years into the restoration project at the Townsends&#8217; property. (Supplied: Sputnik)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Regent parrot numbers have been in decline for several years, with a <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-11-02\/regent-parrot-population-decline-riverland-difficult-bird-group\/103043730\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/103043730\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lack of available nesting sites<\/a> part of the\u00a0population problem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In its most recent census, the Landscape Board only recorded 400 breeding pairs of regent parrots in the Riverland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It is a number they are desperate to see rise during ongoing monitoring of the parrots, during the parrot&#8217;s breeding season between August and November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;With regent parrots &#8230; anything we can do to restore and return land back to its natural form is amazing,&#8221; threatened fauna ecologist Melissa Burford said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman wearing a polo shirt stands in front of gum tree and native Australian vegetation.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/3fe8e68ee6750d11a4dd55ba79057543.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Mel Burford has been undertaking regent parrot surveying in recent weeks. (ABC Riverland: Tom Nancarrow)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s very early stages but the regent parrots can get to their food source and not have to go through dangerous obstacles to get out to the mallee,&#8221; Mr Townsend.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s a real winner and we&#8217;re working with a number of other growers and conservationists too.&#8221;Industry in crisis creates opportunity<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">While the Townsends did not buy their current property for the purpose of growing wine grapevines, they have been involved in the industry since the late 1990s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It&#8217;s meant they have a good understanding of the industry and its <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-11-27\/white-wine-oversupply-set-to-deepen-grower-crisis\/106049916\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106049916\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">struggles in recent years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve done eight harvests here and after 2022 &#8230; pricing was heading south,&#8221; Mr Townsend said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We really sat down and didn&#8217;t really see a future for ourselves in that industry.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">That is a feeling shared right across the Riverland, as the wine grape industry continues to <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-07-22\/wine-grape-growers-battle-drought-and-soaring-water-prices\/105457134\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105457134\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">battle an oversupply and a decline in wine consumption globally<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Two lines of dead and bare grape vines pulled out the ground and laying on the dirt. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/cd82de6c8687f90dd159e9437e041e84.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The sight of grapevines being ripped out has become increasingly common across the Riverland. (ABC Riverland: Sam Bradbrook)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Wine grape growers have been encouraged by industry experts and the South Australian government to <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-06-27\/olive-industry-booms-amid-interest-growing-consuming-produce\/106805614\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106805614\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">transition to more profitable crops<\/a>, such as almonds or olives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The cost of that can be prohibitive, and while assistance in the form of the government&#8217;s recently announced <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-09-18\/109-million-support-package-for-struggling-sa-wine-industry\/107168028\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/107168028\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$109 million package<\/a> has arrived, for the Townsends&#8217; it has come too late.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It would also not facilitate the pair&#8217;s goal of returning their land to its natural state and a sanctuary for bird life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve been lucky enough to utilise some of the poly [polyethylene pipe] back onto the trees and use a small amount of our water allocation to get the plants going,&#8221; Mr Townsend said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man wearing sunglasses smiles while standing in front of native Australian vegetation.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/86d29c0b8c8c40ffe46b04c8ec836445.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Mr Townsend is also the chair of Destination Riverland and has lived in the region his entire life.
