United States President Donald Trump has said the country will not be heeding growing calls to regulate the development of artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, as he departed the White House, Trump told reporters the US \u201cis not going to be putting on brakes\u201d for AI, even as US lawmakers and CEOs of some of the nation\u2019s largest tech firms agreed on the need to slow its pace, citing its potential to put humanity at risk.<\/p>\n

The president likened those fears to other issues he has previously claimed are \u201choaxes\u201d, including climate change and the investigation that examined whether his 2016 campaign colluded with Russian operatives.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen they wanna put on brakes, it\u2019s just like everybody\u2019s going to be dead. You\u2019re all supposed to be dead now, because of global warming. It\u2019s like Russia, Russia, Russia hoax. All of these different hoaxes,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat they wanna do is stop our progress, because we\u2019re leading China by a lot,\u201d he added. \u201cAnd we\u2019re going to keep it that way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump, who just concluded<\/a> a 3-day summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, said the US should not cooperate with China on the technology.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would rather not integrate, because we\u2019re leading by a lot,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen you\u2019re leading, you don\u2019t open it up to each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

During his final address before the United Nations General Assembly, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged leaders on Tuesday to enact guardrails on AI, warning that unchecked development \u201cwithout accountability\u201d could put the world at risk.<\/p>\n

US lawmakers and experts had hoped Trump and Xi would use their meeting to deliver a breakthrough agreement on AI. But that did not materialise.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe didn\u2019t spend that much time talking about it,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

As criticism rippled through Washington \u2014 and around the world \u2014 over the squandered opportunity, the White House on Friday said the US and China agreed to establish<\/a> a \u201cbilateral communication channel\u201d for AI incidents. There was no immediate comment from Beijing on the White House statement.<\/p>\n

The president, however, indicated that any AI discussions he had with Xi, who is set to meet with Trump two more times this year, largely focused on his preferred name for the technology: \u201csuper intelligence\u201d.<\/p>\n

China \u201crespects\u201d Washington\u2019s switch in phrasing from artificial intelligence to \u201csuper intelligence\u201d, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Saturday, after Donald Trump said Xi appeared to like the rewording.<\/p>\n

The US president announced on Tuesday that his administration would rename AI as \u201csuper intelligence\u201d, or SI, in official communications.<\/p>\n

\u201cArtificial intelligence technologies are continuously developing, all parties can strengthen exchanges, discuss in-depth and seek consensus in light of the latest situation,\u201d said a statement from an unidentified Chinese ministry spokesperson.<\/p>\n
