Instead of relying on me to remember that I had spent too much time scrolling, it made me stop and think before I opened the apps I kept reaching for.

That small change was surprisingly effective, and I started noticing that I wasn’t just spending less time on my phone; I was getting chunks of my day back.

                    Related

I created a personal command center with Android’s Quick Settings tiles

And now I barely open apps

The wait before opening an app changed everything

I stopped opening apps on autopilot

The first ScreenZen feature I noticed was also the simplest: It made me wait before opening an app. I could still tap Instagram or YouTube like I normally would, but instead of being dropped into the feed, I had to sit through a short delay.

I started reaching for an app, seeing the countdown, and realizing I had no reason to open it.

Sometimes I would cancel and put my phone down. Other times, I’d wait and open it anyway, but the extra few seconds gave me a chance to make that decision consciously.

I could still open it when I had a reason, but the process stopped those completely automatic launches from being effortless.

Adding a few seconds between the impulse and the app was surprisingly effective at making me notice how often I was doing it.

I started scheduling when I could use distracting apps

Social media didn’t need to be off-limits all day

Sometimes, I genuinely wanted to use Instagram or YouTube, but other times, opening these apps derailed whatever I was doing. To address this, I decided not to impose a blanket restriction on these apps throughout the day. Instead, I began scheduling specific times when I could use them.

With ScreenZen, I can establish different rules based on the day and time. This flexibility lets me access distracting apps freely during my leisure time while making them harder to reach when I’m working or trying to wind down at night.

The settings can be customized for individual apps, so I didn’t have to treat every distraction on my phone the same way.

This was more useful than I expected because it removed a decision I was constantly making. I didn’t have to think, “Should I open YouTube right now?” when I was supposed to be working.

The restriction was already there. And when my scheduled window ended, I could use the app normally again instead of feeling like I had blocked it permanently.

The question that made me rethink every app I opened

A simple prompt exposed my phone habit

Before opening a distracting app, I can add a simple prompt like “Is this important?” instead of letting myself jump straight into the app. The idea is to make me pause and consciously decide whether I actually want to open it.

I went through the dropdown options and chose “Why am I checking?”

There were plenty of times when I tapped an app without having anything specific to do there. I was bored, waiting for something, or following the muscle memory of opening the same app when I picked up my phone.

Seeing that question made those automatic launches much harder to ignore.

I already had Digital Wellbeing, so why did I need another app?

            I needed more than Android’s built-in screen-time tools

I used Android’s Digital Wellbeing long before I tried ScreenZen, so I knew my phone habits weren’t exactly great.

Digital Wellbeing shows how much time I’ve spent on each app, how often I’ve unlocked my phone, and how many times I’ve opened certain apps. I can also set app timers or use Focus mode to pause distracting apps.

Seeing that I’d spent an hour on YouTube could be surprising, but it didn’t tell me why I’d opened YouTube in the first place. The same was true when I noticed I’d opened an app dozens of times.

On the other hand, ScreenZen intervened when I was about to repeat the behavior instead of waiting until the end of the day to show me the result.

A delay before an app opened or an interruption during scrolling made me confront the decision while it was still happening.

                    Related

I created a home screen that reminds me of my goals every time I unlock my phone — here’s how

A few home screen tweaks nudged me back to my goals

A tiny pause helped me take back more of my day

I started using ScreenZen to cut down on my phone usage, and I was pleasantly surprised by how effective it was.

I didn’t have to delete the apps I enjoyed or completely block myself from using them.
