Russell, Russell, Russell. Nine times out of ten, I would agree with you. Normally speaking, I often gravitate towards cleaner and less busy dials – Henry Cavill and I share this inclination. And normally speaking, a time-only or time-and-date watch is as clean as it gets. Now, with the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Chronometre collection, we are all spoilt for choice. I would not dare to say there is a weak link. The collection’s debut at Watches and Wonders 2026 was received with much fanfare for the entire trio of complication variants. But the one, for me, has to be the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Chronometre Date Power Reserve. Here’s why…

The case

The Master Control Chronometre Date Power Reserve case, compared to the Master Control Chronometre Date, carries the same 50-metre depth rating that offers just enough to pass the daily-wearer sniff test. Where it differs is that it is 1mm larger in diameter at 39mm, and .8mm thicker at 9.2mm. A sporty watch under 10mm is something to be admired, and it is a key differentiator between an entry into the integrated luxury sports watch and a great entry into the increasingly saturated segment.

The case finishing is handsome, with a predominantly brushed front surface accented by mirrored, bevelled edges. The bezel is practically non-existent, letting the dial be a bit larger and front and centre. This does make the watch feel a bit larger on the wrist, but in this 39mm size, average-sized wrists or larger will be more than happy.

The dial

The dial is often the first source of intrigue for watch buyers, and all of the three complication variants within the Master Control Chronometre collection follow the same format: stainless steel models with contrasting blue sunray-brushed dials. However, there is no 18k rose gold model with a tonally matching brown sunray-brushed dial for the Date Power Reserve like there is for the Date and Perpetual Calendar. But what really makes this particular model stand out is not just the fact that it adds a power reserve indicator into the mix, but really how it is tastefully incorporated into the dial.

Maybe it comes from being a former 1815 Up/Down owner, but I really like the balance and intrigue offered by the dual sub-dials at the 9 o’clock and 3 o’clock positions of the dial. It creates a perfect sense of dial harmony and introduces an element that is not all that common in the saturated integrated bracelet luxury sports watch segment: a power reserve indicator on the dial. Were it introduced in a manner that was not so balanced, as Jaeger-LeCoultre has executed it, it would all fall apart, and I would have then been more likely in Russell’s camp with the Date model. Were it done with just one sub-dial and a standard date frame, it really would not have the degree of allure I am finding in the actual dial rendition. In terms of these two complications, Jaeger-LeCoultre could not have better designed its incorporation into the dial than this.

The bracelet

The bracelet remains the same as its steel siblings in the collection – which is a good thing because the bracelet is well designed in my eyes. It would not make sense to have it vary across the models within the trio. To have a distinct integrated bracelet in such a saturated segment is a massive challenge, and one Jaeger-LeCoultre definitely overcame. Most designs that enter the category often have watch nerds claiming it looks too much like what you would find on a Royal Oak or Nautilus. What really makes it stand out is its flattened, elongated, hexagonal-like intermediary link that not only serves to create an aesthetic twist, but also provides a functional purpose. You will notice on the underside of the bracelet that the two screws that connect the links to the bracelet are within this shape.

The movement

Exhibited inside is the in-house automatic calibre 738. It is a well-decorated calibre with nicely performed striping on the bridges, and on the 18k rose gold openworked rotor as well. In terms of performance, the calibre 738 is COSC-certified, regulated within Jaeger-LeCoultre’s HPG Seal standards, and offers a very respectable 70 hours of power reserve.

The verdict

There is ultimately no losing option within the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Chronometre lineup. I would have enjoyed a 100-metre depth rating in place of the 50 metres on offer, but then again the slender profile of the case is not an element I would want to lose either. But, of the three, it really is the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Chronometre Date Power Reserve for me, as it is something that is not only very distinguished within the context of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s catalogue, but also within the entire integrated bracelet luxury sports watch segment as a whole.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Chronometre Date Power Reserve pricing and availability

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Chronometre Date Power Reserve is available now for purchase.
