Sept. 27, 1997: NASA&#8217;s Mars Pathfinder lander sends its last transmission to Earth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"elk-3f6290ee-baa9-11f1-b7b9-2d818ef59a6d\">On Sept. 27, 1997, NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17745-mars-pathfinder-sojourner-rover.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17745-mars-pathfinder-sojourner-rover.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17745-mars-pathfinder-sojourner-rover.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mars Pathfinder mission<\/a> beamed its very last data transmission back to Earth.<\/p>\n<p>Pathfinder was three months into what was supposed to be just a one-month mission on <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/solar-system\/mars\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/solar-system\/mars\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/solar-system\/mars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mars<\/a> when the base station&#8217;s battery began to fail. NASA struggled to reestablish contact with Pathfinder for another five months before giving up and calling the mission complete.<\/p>\n<p>The Mars Pathfinder mission consisted of a base station and the very <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17745-mars-pathfinder-sojourner-rover.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17745-mars-pathfinder-sojourner-rover.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17745-mars-pathfinder-sojourner-rover.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first Mars rover named Sojourner<\/a>. As a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/35221-nasa-discovery-missions-asteroids-psyche-lucy.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/35221-nasa-discovery-missions-asteroids-psyche-lucy.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/35221-nasa-discovery-missions-asteroids-psyche-lucy.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Discovery class mission<\/a>, was designed as one of the agency&#8217;s &#8220;faster, better, cheaper&#8221; approaches to planetary exploration Its $262.3 million cost (in 1997 dollars) represented a fraction of the billions spent on NASA&#8217;s larger <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18234-viking-1.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18234-viking-1.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18234-viking-1.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Viking landers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Pathfinder was actually a technology testbed of sorts, with NASA using the mission to test many techniques the agency would later use in future <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/13558-historic-mars-missions.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/13558-historic-mars-missions.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/13558-historic-mars-missions.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mars missions<\/a>. The most prominent of those techniques were the use of airbags to land Pathfinder on Mars, as well its Sojourner rover&#8217;s rocker-bogie suspension system. Both technologies were scaled up for NASA&#8217;s next rovers on Mars, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/7402-mars-rover-faq-martian-lives-spirit-opportunity.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/7402-mars-rover-faq-martian-lives-spirit-opportunity.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/7402-mars-rover-faq-martian-lives-spirit-opportunity.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Spirit and Opportinity<\/a>, which launched in 2004.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-6562252c-bab1-11f1-90bf-af8b9420f4cd\">In all, Pathfinder took more than 16,500 photos of its Ares Vallis landing site on Mars, with Sojourner snapping another 550 photos. They made 15 chemical analyses of Mars rocks and soil, and collected Mars weather data as well. That pattern would be repeated with Spirit and Opportunity, which both launched on a 90-day primary mission but survived for years (Opportunity would ultimately last 14.5 years on Mars).<\/p>\n<p>Sojourner&#8217;s success not only paved the way for <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18766-spirit-rover.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18766-spirit-rover.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18766-spirit-rover.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Spirit<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18289-opportunity-rover.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18289-opportunity-rover.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18289-opportunity-rover.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Opportunity<\/a>, but also for even larger rovers to come. NASA&#8217;s car-sized <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/mars-rovers\/curiosity-mars-rover-inspects-cracked-wheel-space-photo-of-the-day-for-july-24-2026\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/mars-rovers\/curiosity-mars-rover-inspects-cracked-wheel-space-photo-of-the-day-for-july-24-2026\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/mars-rovers\/curiosity-mars-rover-inspects-cracked-wheel-space-photo-of-the-day-for-july-24-2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mars rover Curiosity<\/a> landed on the Red Planet in 2012 and was followed by the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/perseverance-rover-mars-2020-mission\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/perseverance-rover-mars-2020-mission\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/perseverance-rover-mars-2020-mission\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mars rover Perserverance<\/a> in 2021. Both are powered not by solar arrays, which limited the lives of Sojourner, Spirit and Opportunity, but by a nuclear battery, with both rovers still active today.<\/p>\n<p>Want more space history?
