Major funding will expand regional research careers and bring more cancer trials within reach of rural patients.<\/p>\n

New investment will expand regional research careers and improve access to potentially life-saving surgical cancer trials.<\/p>\n

The NSW Government has announced an $11 million investment to strengthen cancer research and improve access to clinical trials across regional, rural and remote communities.<\/p>\n

Announced to mark World Cancer Research Day, the funding will support two major programs focused on developing regional research expertise and reducing geographical and cultural barriers to cancer trials and treatment.<\/p>\n

The investment forms part of a broader $21 million, five-year commitment delivered through the Cancer Institute NSW\u2019s Translational Cancer Research Capacity Building Grants.<\/p>\n

University of Newcastle Professor Nikola Bowden will receive $5 million to expand the Regional Cancer Research Network NSW. The collaborative network includes Cancer Voices NSW, the University of Wollongong and several local health districts, including Northern NSW.<\/p>\n

Funding will support regional research fellowships, PhD scholarships, travel awards, education programs and co-funded research grants. The network will also investigate cancer challenges specific to regional communities.<\/p>\n

University of Sydney Professor Michael Solomon will receive $6 million to establish the NSW Surgical Cancer Trial Capacity and Equity Alliance.<\/p>\n

The statewide network will increase access to surgical cancer trials, particularly for patients from regional, rural and remote areas and Aboriginal and multicultural communities.<\/p>\n

Professor Solomon said fewer than four per cent of registered cancer trials were surgical, despite surgery being the primary curative treatment for most solid tumours.<\/p>\n

The alliance will train trial coordinators, establish centralised ethics, governance and data systems, and work directly with regional hospitals to build local research capacity.<\/p>\n

Minister for Medical Research David Harris said the grants would help translate research into better cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment while creating opportunities for researchers throughout NSW.<\/p>\n

NSW Chief Cancer Officer Professor Tracey O\u2019Brien AM said stronger partnerships between researchers, clinicians and communities would help ensure advances in cancer care benefited people regardless of their location or background.<\/p>\n

The remaining $10 million within the broader funding package will support Sydney Cancer Partners and SPHERE, focusing on innovative cancer research and faster translation of data-driven discoveries into clinical care.<\/p>\n
