Just two years after receiving a life-saving heart transplant, 25-year-old Wollongong cyclist and coach Cameron Butcher is back racing, and this week he is competing at the 2026 Australian Transplant Games<\/a> in Launceston.<\/p>\n

The 18th Australian Transplant Games are underway in Tasmania from 26 September to 3 October, bringing together hundreds of transplant recipients, living donors and donor families from across Australia. <\/p>\n

Competitors are taking part in 17 sports, including cycling, as the Games celebrate what is possible after transplantation while raising awareness of organ and tissue donation.<\/p>\n

For Butcher, simply being there represents a remarkable turnaround.<\/p>\n

A cycling coach and Exercise Science student, Butcher\u2019s life changed dramatically in 2022 when he was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart muscle. His condition progressively deteriorated and, by the end of 2024, he was relying on a pacemaker and had endured seven defibrillator shocks.<\/p>\n

Eventually, his health had declined to the point where he could no longer work, ride or exercise.<\/p>\n

Placed on the urgent organ transplant waiting list, Butcher received the news he had been hoping for just one week later. A donor heart had become available.<\/p>\n

Two years on, the transformation has been extraordinary. Butcher has returned to cycling and competitive sport, finishing second at the 2025 Road Nationals in Perth and winning his age category at The Willo, a 60km mountain bike race.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy heart transplant has allowed me to do all the things I love, worry-free,\u201d Butcher said. \u201cI\u2019m incredibly grateful to be alive, to put this heart to good use, and to compete alongside people who have walked a similar path.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the Transplant Games, Butcher is competing across cycling, tennis, swimming and field events. <\/p>\n

While adding medals to his collection is one of his goals, the Games offer something considerably bigger than competition.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve never been to Tasmania before, so I\u2019m really looking forward to racing around Launceston and connecting with the wider transplant community,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The event brings together people with remarkably different transplant stories, but with a common experience of having been given another opportunity to live active lives.<\/p>\n

For Butcher, that makes the Games an opportunity to highlight the people behind every transplant, and the decision that makes those second chances possible.<\/p>\n

\u201cMore than anything, I want the Australian public to know the power of organ donation,\u201d he said. \u201cRegistering as a donor can save up to seven lives \u2013 it gives someone a true second chance at living the life they want to live.\u201d<\/p>\n

Transplant Australia CEO Chris Thomas said the stories of transplant recipients demonstrated the impact that organ donation can have.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are thousands of Australians alive today because of the generosity of donors and their families,\u201d Thomas said. \u201cRegistering as a donor gives you the opportunity to leave a legacy like nothing else.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Australian Transplant Games<\/a> continue in Launceston until 3 October, with cycling among the 17 sports contested throughout the week.<\/p>\n
