Here is what these claims really tell consumers, and what they leave out." decoding="async" fetchpriority="high"/>Words such as “baked”, “natural” and “low-fat” can make a packaged food look healthier than it actually is. Here is what these claims really tell consumers, and what they leave out. The words on the front of a food packet can be persuasive. “Baked” sounds lighter. “Natural” brings to mind something wholesome. “Low-fat” can make a biscuit or snack appear like a smarter choice. But these words tell only a small part of the story. The front of the packet is designed to attract attention. The nutrition panel and ingredient list offer far more useful information.

“Baked” does not automatically mean healthy

“Baked” describes how a food was cooked, not how nutritious it is.A baked chip may avoid deep frying, but it can still contain refined flour, considerable salt and significant amounts of fat. Depending on the recipe, its calorie content may also be close to that of a fried alternative. So “baked, not fried” answers one question: Was it deep-fried? It does not answer the bigger question: Is this a nutritious everyday food?

“Natural” can sound more powerful than it is

“Natural” is one of the most reassuring words on a food packet. But in India, its use is subject to specific conditions under FSSAI’s Food Safety and Standards (Advertising and Claims) Regulations, 2018.The term can be used for a single food that has undergone simple physical processing and has not had an artificial substance or product added to it.That matters because many packaged snacks contain several ingredients and undergo multiple processing steps. A product may contain natural ingredients without the finished product itself qualifying as “natural”.There is another detail shoppers can easily miss. If words such as “natural”, “fresh” or “pure” appear as part of a brand name without describing the food, regulations require a disclaimer clarifying that use.

“Low-fat” does not mean low-calorie

“Low-fat” is not simply a marketing compliment. It is a defined nutrition claim with a prescribed limit for fat content. The catch is that reducing fat does not automatically make a product healthier. When fat is reduced, manufacturers may use other ingredients to maintain taste and texture, depending on the product.A low-fat biscuit, for instance, can still contain substantial amounts of sugar or refined starch. And low-fat does not necessarily mean low-calorie.

The ingredient list often tells the bigger story

A packet can make a food sound wholesome without giving the complete picture. The ingredient list is useful because ingredients are listed in descending order by weight. If refined flour, sugar or another ingredient appears near the beginning, it makes sense to pay attention to how much of that food is being consumed. The nutrition panel adds another layer. Calories, sugars, sodium, fat, protein and other declared nutrients help put the product’s claims into context.

Flip the packet before making the choice

“Baked”, “natural” and “low-fat” are not necessarily false claims. They simply do not tell the whole story. The useful habit is simple: read the front, then check the back.A healthy-sounding adjective can catch attention. The ingredient list and nutrition information can show what is actually inside.Disclaimer: This article is for general awareness and does not replace individual dietary advice from a qualified nutrition professional or healthcare provider.

Words such as “baked”, “natural” and “low-fat” can make a packaged food look healthier than it actually is.…

[36
64,63,476400,476398,137,476402,476405,476399,476401,476403,532,476404,354190
post-908375","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-nutrition","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-baked-chips","tag-fssai-regulations","tag-health","tag-healthy-food-labels","tag-ingredient-list","tag-low-fat-snacks","tag-misleading-food-claims","tag-natural-food","tag-nutrition","tag-nutrition-panel","tag-packaged-snacks
["GET
