Nearly $28 billion worth of distributions will hit accounts in September, according to Bell Potter, followed by another $10 billion in October.

Want more finance news? Download our new app for even more coverage

Commonwealth Bank’s $4.5 billion final dividend will hit investors’ bank accounts on Tuesday. Its dividend is $2.70 a share, up from $2.60 last year.

Ampol will pay out dividends to shareholders on Wednesday. It declared an interim dividend of $1.85 per share, up a whopping 362.5 per cent over the payout last year when it was 40 cents per share.

The company had a bumper year, with the volatility from the Iran war pushing oil price higher and making its refineries more profitable.

BHP, the largest stock on our market, paid about $7 billion in dividends to investors last week. It paid $US0.99 ($1.37) per share to investors, which was about 50 per cent above what it paid last year, thanks to its copper business.

Roughly $12.5 billion in dividends was paid over the course of last week, with companies like Woolworths and Woodside also among those who paid out to investors.

Total payouts for the past financial year were $105.9 billion, which broke three years of falling dividends.

Wealth Within chief analyst and founder Dale Gillham told news.com.au while the recent earnings season did not bring any big surprises, dividends were a stronger part.

“Many companies were comfortable returning more cash to their shareholders, suggesting acquisitions and other growth opportunities may not be on the immediate horizon,” he said.

ASX’s highest-yielding dividend stocks

The ASX 200 dividend yield is currently 3.1 per cent, which is lower compared to its long run history. But there are companies paying dividends well above this average.

CommSec analysis of Morningstar data has revealed the ASX’s 10 highest-yielding companies.

CommSec equity market strategist James Gruber said several of these companies were facing challenging outlooks.

Helia Group has a dividend yield of 17 per cent for the 2026 calendar year. The company provides lenders mortgage insurance.

“Risks in this sector have increased given the current downturn in the property market, the potential for additional rate hikes, and the possibility of higher credit loss provisions,” Mr Gruber said.

Markets are currently pricing in a 90 per cent change of a 25 basis point rate hike by the Reserve Bank of Australia tomorrow, which would take the cash rate to 4.6 per cent.

International fund manager GQG had a dividend yield of 14.6 per cent. It has experienced fund outflows after an underweight to global tech stocks impacted its performance.

“Three commercial property REITs make the list. Parts of the commercial real estate sector have had a difficult few years post-Covid with the trend of people increasingly working from home, and with borrowing costs going up this year,” Mr Gruber said.

Looking at the highest dividend stocks among large cap companies with more than $10 billion in market cap, Ampol had the highest yield at 7 per cent.

Other energy-related stocks like Woodside, Origin Energy and Santos also dominated, along with utilities such as APA Group and mall owner Scentre Group.

For more defensive sectors, Metcash has an above-market-average dividend yield of 6.6 per cent.

Utility companies like APA Group, Origin Energy and AGL Energy also made the list, along with telecos like Chorus, which is New Zealand’s largest telco infrastructure company.

BWP Trust is a unique listed REIT, with Mr Gruber noting about 80 per cent of its rent roll was from Bunnings.

Dividends in focus following CGT changes

Dividend paying stocks have come into focus this year following the government’s changes to the capital gains tax discount.

The 50 per cent CGT discount will be replaced with an inflation-based discount and a minimum 30 per cent tax on gains from July 1, 2027.

The new rules mean some expect investors to increasingly turn to dividend stocks generating a higher-income over high-growth stocks.

Mr Gillham said he would caution investors on taking this strategy.

“Tax should never be the reason to buy or not buy any investment, rather the investment should tick all the right boxes for growth first and then income,” he said.

“Chasing a high yield is only valuable if the company has the earnings and balance sheet to sustain it, and as we know all too well, dividends change.

“High or increasing dividend yields can mean a stock with a falling share price, and it makes no sense chasing a high dividend if your capital is eroding.”

Mr Gruber said it was important to note that a company’s past dividend yield may not be sustained in the future. Dividends could change due to factors like earnings, one-off events and payout ratios.

This content was created in partnership with
