Isaac Del Toro<\/a> was considered one of the top favorites for the World Cycling Championships in Montreal, but the Mexican was actually always playing catch-up. Brandon McNulty, his teammate at UAE Team Emirates-XRG, took the win<\/a>. That prompted some strong words from Tom Pidcock<\/a>, who didn\u2019t see Del Toro ride to his full potential. Del Toro responds to the Brit.Del Toro made plenty of strong attacks, but never managed to break away. He had to settle for fifth place at the finish. \u201cFor me, nothing mattered but the rainbow jersey,\u201d he told ESPN<\/a> after the finish. \u201cThat\u2019s what we came here for; that was our only mindset. We knew we didn\u2019t have the team, but that wasn\u2019t because we lacked the will or the willingness to give it our all.\u201dDel Toro was alone in the final, but he did have McNulty with him, his American teammate at UAE. When McNulty attacked, the Mexican stayed put. Pidcock later criticized that decision. \u201cDel Toro was clearly riding in support of McNulty at the very end”, the Brit said, not mincing words<\/a>. But Del Toro maintains his innocence.<\/p>\n

He emphasised once again that he and his Mexican team had come to Montreal with only one goal in mind. \u201cI think it was clear that we came here to win. I don\u2019t hold back until the finish. We tried everything, and maybe I should have positioned myself better for the sprint,\u201d said the young climber, offering his only point of criticism.<\/p>\n

So Pidcock\u2019s criticism falls on deaf ears. In fact, Del Toro turns the argument on its head. According to him, it was the other countries that didn\u2019t do enough to take responsibility. \u201cAll the other teams remained passive and tried to take advantage of us. We knew we didn\u2019t have the strongest team, but I think it was clear that we wanted to win.\u201d<\/p>\n

With Tadej Poga\u010dar out of the race, Del Toro knew this was a golden opportunity. \u201cWe knew we could win, but it\u2019s a shame it didn\u2019t work out. We had a crucial opportunity, and I\u2019m satisfied with how the race went. We didn\u2019t win, but we did take another step forward in our ambitions and in the mindset we have for these kinds of races.\u201d<\/p>\n

Finally, Del Toro expressed his joy for McNulty, who pulled off a huge upset in Canada by winning the world title. \u201cI\u2019m happy for Brandon; he deserves this success, but we wanted to win. He\u2019s worked hard for this and even worked for me a few times\u2014he deserves the best.
