(Supplied: Joe Fa&#8217;agase)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The struggle with supplying blood for people with rare blood types, such as Joe, has prompted calls for more Australians of mixed heritage to donate, particularly given just 3 per cent of the population donates blood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It&#8217;s also fostered new Australian research into creating laboratory-grown blood at scale for use in such patients in future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Lifeblood scientists can already grow fully functional red blood cells from donor stem cells in the lab for research purposes, but it takes three weeks to produce a teaspoonful, and the process is prohibitively expensive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Producing a unit of lab-grown blood costs about $1 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But a new research collaboration between the University of Queensland and Lifeblood will explore manufacturing techniques to increase production and reduce costs.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A person holds up a plastic container with red liquid being put in it in a lab.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/36d06f42ecfca675b29b533fc2c89bf8.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Scientists can already grow fully functional red blood cells from donor stem cells in the lab for research purposes. (Supplied: Lifeblood)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;If we can&#8217;t engineer more efficient solutions, these kinds of exciting therapies are never going to get off the ground.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;By engineering smarter and more efficient manufacturing processes, we can help bring costs down and make these treatments more accessible to patients who need them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Fa&#8217;agase brothers donate blood when their aunt needs a transfusion. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Joe, who works in reality television, admits the situation sometimes leaves him &#8220;a little bit scared&#8221;, but he&#8217;s &#8220;excited&#8221; about the research, acknowledging it is still in its early days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It gives a reassurance that we will be OK, that we don&#8217;t have to just rely on each other.
