More apps made the cut later on, Threads for instance, after it was launched in 2023.

I ignored every one of them without exception, and the moment the cutoff hit, I’d tap through the warning and keep scrolling anyway, every time, without fail.

Android has a plethora of built-in distraction tools working in the same reactive way that only step in after the habit has already kicked in. It walks you through a short mindful exercise with cartoonish visuals that you can swipe left or right. They remind you of what else you could be doing instead of scrolling through YouTube Shorts.

It also asks you how long you plan to use the app, or gives you the option to do something else. There is also a breathing exercise that helped me relax my reflex to open the app without any intention of opening the app.

The feature was exclusively available on the new Google Pixel 11 lineup in August, and the September Pixel Drop brought it to Pixel 6 and newer models running Android 17.

That’s a significantly wider rollout than most Digital Wellbeing additions get on their first day, and it’s what finally counts for me.

Instagram, Threads, and YouTube; basically all of them

I integrated Pause Point with the social media apps I use the most, including YouTube, Threads, and Instagram. Not every app on my phone deserved the friction needed to stay off of them.

Looking closely at exactly which apps eat your time tends to be the real first step toward fixing anything, and these three were the ones I opened with muscle memory, not even intention.

I left out important apps like email or my banking apps on purpose, since I open those for a reason. But Instagram, YouTube, and Threads were the exact opposite, which I opened on autopilot.

My timers were supposed to protect me from the same three apps.

The difference showed up almost immediately in how each one felt to open going forward, after the delay was in place. The timer was one thing I could dismiss without thinking twice, but a pause is something I had to sit through first before anything happened at all.

It annoyed me before it actually worked

First friction, then came behavior change

The first few days were genuinely frustrating, since I wanted to open the app and got a delay instead of instant access every time I reached for my phone.

That friction or delay didn’t feel like progress at the time; it felt like an obstacle Google had put in my way for no good reason. I nearly turned it off more than once out of irritation.

After a few days, though, the pause started doing its job for me without really noticing the shift. I began closing the prompt more often than I opened the app sitting behind it, which never happened with the old timers.

Other small friction-like tweaks across Android have quietly reshaped how people interact with their most used apps this year. Pause Point fits the same pattern and performs better than anything Digital Wellbeing has to offer.

It’s not a cure, but the first thing that worked

I’m not going to pretend that Pause Point has fixed my compulsive phone checking for good.

What I can comfortably say is that my old Digital Wellbeing limits sat in the same settings all these years without changing a single habit, no matter how many times I tweak the limits.

In my use case, Pause Point has done its job on all three apps I applied it to.

Whether that holds up in a few months is something that I would truly have to see, if it can change my social media habits for good.

Other than that, it’s the first time a Digital Wellbeing tool has earned enough trust that I’m willing to find out.

I set up app times on Instagram and YouTube years ago, when Digital Wellbeing first became a real…

[16
64,63,203,105
post-909399","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-mobile","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-mobile","tag-technology
["GET
