Anthropic is telling investors that advanced AI could pose “catastrophic or existential risks to humanity”, according to reports, as it prepares for a potential $2tn flotation. The warning inside the startup’s IPO prospectus, which has yet to be made public, was reported by Reuters and the Financial Times. The company has previously called for a slowdown in the breakneck development of AI technology.

What has Meta’s Muse AI done? When the consumer tech reviewer Matt Robb listed a keyboard on Facebook Marketplace, Muse accepted a lowball offer without permission, promised a buyer he was waiting inside and handed over Robb’s home address without consent.

Why are there also new safety concerns at OpenAI? OpenAI has scrapped the release of a new model after internal testing. GPT-6.1 Astra showed deceptive behaviour and tried to use external tools despite knowing it would be unsafe.

What is the warning about an “intelligence explosion”? Two of the “godfathers” of modern AI have told governments to prepare for an AI “intelligence explosion”, which they say could be the most consequential technological development in history. Their concerns focus on the possibility of AIs being able to improve themselves without human intervention.

What did the AI chip company Nvidia announce yesterday? Nvidia announced a new security platform that it said can stop AI agents from going rogue. It also announced a $150bn stock buyback, the largest in US corporate history.

Concern mounts over slow-moving, planetary-scale ‘Kelvin’ wave heading for CaliforniaThere was recently significant erosion at Aliso beach. Photograph: Jake Lee Green/Zuma Press Wire/Shutterstock

Concerns are mounting about an ocean phenomenon known as a Kelvin wave that could raise sea levels along the California coastline by up to a foot, as scientists say El Niño is supercharging the threat of storm surges and flooding in the coming months. The Kelvin wave phenomenon is created when trade winds that usually blow from South America towards Asia die down or reverse in El Niño years, setting off a massive, slow-moving slosh of water.

How is the Trump administration paving the way for more pollution from gas-powered cars? Yesterday it announced it was slashing clean car rules that had been aimed at reducing planet-heating emissions. The move, which relaxes requirements on automakers to control pollution from gasoline-powered cars and light trucks, was criticized by environmentalists.

How have fossil fuel firms tried to influence universities? Recent attacks on US universities by the Trump administration have built on decades of efforts by libertarian donor networks, fossil fuel companies and conservative thinktanks to reshape university governance and increase outside influence, according to a study.

Judge sets $5m bond for third suspect in killing of Black woman found hanging from tree in MississippiChristy Spivey wears a shirt with a portrait of her late daughter, Tasia Fortune. Police disclosed on Friday that Tasia Fortune, 29, was killed before her body was placed in a tree behind an abandoned house in Jackson.

The discovery of her body stoked fear because the scene recalled lynchings in a southern US state with a long history of racial violence. Outside court on Monday, RaShall Brackney, the Jackson police chief, said props were left at the scene “as part of the staging” of a hanging and more arrests were likely.

Sport and politics clash as Israeli captain declares country ‘10 times better than Ireland’ after soccer feudIreland players during the Israeli national anthem. Photograph: Bernadett Szabó/Reuters

Israel’s captain, Manor Solomon, intensified the feud between the Israeli and Ireland soccer teams by claiming his nation was “10 times better” than theirs and saying: “They hate us and we don’t like them. We’re proud to wear the national team’s uniform; proud of our country and our soldiers.”

The two sides played each other at a neutral venue after Ireland opted not to host the fixture in Dublin amid calls for a boycott. Ireland players bowed their heads during Israel’s national anthem. The players also wore black armbands and chose not to shake hands with their opponents in protest against Israel’s military actions in Gaza. Ireland won the match 3-0. The two sides face each other again in Serbia on Sunday.

Where else have sport and politics clashed overnight? The NFL has asked the US Department of Homeland Security to take down a video likening the former Eagles star Brian Dawkins’s most violent hits to a clampdown on immigrants. In a text, Dawkins told ESPN: “I have very respectfully not given permission.”

In other news …Christa Pike cries after being sentenced to death.
