Five people have been arrested after Geraldton man Ashley Wayne Cameron was shot in the leg in the early hours of Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Cameron was taken to Geraldton Regional Hospital about 1am on Wednesday, after he was allegedly shot in the leg by a person known to him. His injuries were not life-threatening.<\/p>\n

A WA Police spokesperson said officers responded to a report of a firearm incident on Allen Road in Moonyoonooka, which is about 12 kilometres outside the Geraldton town centre.<\/p>\n
They arrived to find 32-year-old Cameron with a wound to his leg. The incident sparked a public safety warning in the early hours of Wednesday as a precaution.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile this incident involves a firearm, there is no information to suggest an ongoing threat to the wider community\u201d, a WA Police spokesperson said.<\/p>\n
\u201cMembers of the public are not being asked to be alarmed, however they should remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cameron is a Geraldton man and often travels between the state\u2019s Pilbara, Goldfields and Mid West regions. He is a father and an artist.<\/p>\n
Acting Superintendent Ben Huggett said five people were arrested on Hart Street in Utakarra about 10.30am on Wednesday, and were helping police with their inquiries.<\/p>\n
He said the firearm used in the incident was still outstanding.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was a fast-moving incident and police responded immediately,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re still examining the evidence \u2026 It\u2019s very early days and [the arrested group is] assisting police with enquiries.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt this stage we believe there\u2019s at least three people involved in the incident.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt occurred in a relatively remote area \u2026 it\u2019s rural.\u201d<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, WA Attorney-General Tony Buti, who did not speak about Cameron\u2019s identity, said it seemed he had been shot by \u201cpellets\u201d to his leg, rather than a bullet.<\/p>\n
\u201cAll I know is that there was one person that was injured. Pellets, I think were shot,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think there are three offenders, and the police will provide a [later] update, I\u2019m sure.\u201d<\/p>\n
Significant police resources have been deployed to the area, including the tactical response group.<\/p>\n
Police advised extra resources had also been sent to nearby Utakarra. However, all roads remain open as normal, and the area is not considered to be in lockdown.<\/p>\n
