\n\tAhead of the release of \u201cThe Social Reckoning<\/a>\u201d on Oct. 9, director Aaron Sorkin<\/a> is telling all on the film\u2019s much-discussed reshoots, limited test screenings and why Trump is never named explicitly, despite the January 6 riot playing a part in the plot.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a recent interview with Vanity Fair<\/a>, Sorkin explained that the reshoots, which took place after the trailer was released, had nothing to do with the initial mixed reactions and were simply to \u201cmake it better.\u201d \u201cWe weren\u2019t correcting anything,\u201d he said. \u201cThere are two kinds of reshoots: one is the \u2018Oh, we\u2019re in trouble. We need to reshoot this.\u2019 And that usually happens on $150 million superhero movies. The other kinds of reshoots are \u2018Oh, we really like this movie. It\u2019s good. Let\u2019s make it better.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe explained that Sony Pictures chairman and CEO Tom Rothman asked if there was anything he\u2019d want to reshoot, if given the option. \u201cYeah, I would go back and rewrite and reshoot the whole thing,\u201d said Sorkin, before clarifying that there were only two scenes he felt he could add something to. \u201cAnd so he opened the checkbook and gave us three days of shooting.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tA follow-up to 2010\u2019s \u201cThe Social Network,\u201d \u201cThe Social Reckoning\u201d follows former Facebook engineer and whistleblower Frances Haugen (Mikey Madison) and Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz ( Jeremy Allen White) as they expose the inner workings of Facebook. Their work culminated in \u201cThe Facebook Files,\u201d a 2021 investigative series revealing Facebook\u2019s harmful effects on teens and its role in spreading misinformation, including content linked to political violence. <\/p>\n

\n\tHowever, despite the relevance of politics to the real-life events the film is based on and its recreation of Jan. 6, Trump is not mentioned by name in \u201cThe Social Reckoning,\u201d a decision Sorkin stands by.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI want to be clear: I was never asked to do that, to not mention Trump by name,\u201d he said. \u201cI turned in the script and a day or two later met with Tom Rothman, who was full speed ahead on it. And I promised him, unprovoked, that we would not see any Trump signage, no \u2018Make America Great Again.\u2019 The movie is about Facebook\u2019s role and the rise of divisiveness, extremism, and hyper-partisanship in the country. It is not a red-blue thing, even though, obviously, it will be felt that way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSorkin also revealed that a scene in which one of Facebook\u2019s senior officials says, \u201cI don\u2019t know what that bitch thinks she\u2019s doing,\u201d had to be rewritten to remove the expletive, per the outside legal firm hired by Sony\u2019s. \u201cThe lawyer said, \u2018Unless you can show me that at one point a senior Facebook executive referred to an ex-employee as a bitch, you can\u2019t do that.\u2019 So it was that.\u201d <\/p>\n
