{"id":911483,"date":"2026-09-30T22:06:12","date_gmt":"2026-09-30T22:06:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/911483\/"},"modified":"2026-09-30T22:06:12","modified_gmt":"2026-09-30T22:06:12","slug":"calls-from-mortgage-stressed-home-owners-double-as-interest-rates-and-other-costs-pile-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/911483\/","title":{"rendered":"Calls from mortgage-stressed home owners double as interest rates and other costs pile up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A free service that helps home owners facing mortgage stress has been forced to temporarily close its books as the number of calls for assistance doubles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mortgage Stress Victoria chief executive Nadia Harrison says severe financial stress was also reaching new parts of the community in a trend she expects to continue after interest rates rose to a 15-year high on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She said the organisation was facing &#8220;overwhelming demand&#8221; as the pressures of <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-09-29\/rba-lifts-rates-highest-level-in-15-years-september-2026\/107206640\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/107206640\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">interest rate rises<\/a> and other costs such as insurance, groceries and fuel continued to pile up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve seen a doubling of people reaching out for assistance between January and August this financial year,&#8221; Ms Harrison said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is the greatest demand we&#8217;ve ever seen.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mortgage Stress Victoria&#8217;s latest data showed more than half of its clients were employed, rather than being welfare recipients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Some were seeking financial assistance for the first time.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Mortgage Stress Victoria CEO Nadia Harrison wears a green top and black jacket\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/acd15f0c37327007c5f0e0c5abb170d4.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Nadia Harrison says multiple cost pressures are leading to mortgage stress. (ABC News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We service a cohort of clients who are at risk of homelessness, so to have a majority of clients that are employed, it shows that the problem is really extensive throughout the population,&#8221; Ms Harrison said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">With demand for its services expected to keep building in coming months, Ms Harrison said the service had paused new intakes for all but those who needed the most urgent help.<\/p>\n<p>Melbourne suburbs among most mortgage stressed<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Calls to the National Debt Helpline have also increased, with 4,153 people contacting the helpline in August, compared to 2,990 at the same time last year.<\/p>\n<p>Financial hardship resources:<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Meanwhile, a data analytics firm says several Melbourne growth corridors are among those already suffering the most widespread mortgage stress across the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Digital Finance Analytics defines mortgage stress in cashflow terms \u2014 when a household had more outgoings than income \u2014 and bases its findings on phone surveys which are then extrapolated using census data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Its analysis for the end of August listed Narre Warren, Cranbourne, Roxburgh Park, Pakenham and Ballarat as the five postcodes with the highest number of affected households in Victoria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Horsham pensioners Annie and Andrew Nikkelson told the ABC that paying the mortgage was increasingly tough.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve sort of got to prioritise \u2014 each fortnight we&#8217;ve got to work out what gets paid and what doesn&#8217;t get paid,&#8221; Ms Nikkelson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Her husband said they were living from day to day.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Couple Andrew and Annie Nikkelson pictured on a street in Horsham\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/d4161debb8b3c1025dc5c4a9f69c9cca.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Andrew and Annie Nikkelson say they are living day to day, and may consider selling their house if interest rates go up again. (ABC News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In South Yarra, in inner Melbourne, Steve Whittington is also struggling to pay the mortgage on a home he has owned for 25 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Having lost his job in April, Mr Whittington said successive interest rate rises had also made it incredibly difficult to pay his mortgage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Sometimes I Airbnb the whole house, like at the moment,&#8221; said the father of two, who often goes camping with his children during school holidays or stays at a friend&#8217;s place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Other times, when I don&#8217;t have my children \u2026 I just Airbnb my bedroom, because it&#8217;s got an ensuite, and then I just sleep in my daughter&#8217;s bedroom.
