Overlooking a sea of more than 15,000 people on the red earth plains in outback New South Wales on Saturday, Leo Sayer had the crowd rocking.

The British-born singer who calls Australia home is best known for hits like You Make Me Feel Like Dancing, When I Need You, and Moonlighting, which was released 50 years ago last Friday.

But at 77, the singer who first rose to fame in the 1970s believes the best is yet to come.

“I’ve still got a fire in my belly to do better and better,” he said.

“I know that’s silly sometimes because, you know, you get to a ripe old age and … all you can do is look back … but no, I’m looking forward.

“[And] I keep thinking that there’s more to come.”

After more than 55 years of performing, Sayer says he still loves it, and was thrilled to get the chance to strut his stuff at the Mundi Mundi Bash.

Now in its fifth year, the outback music festival is held every August on a goat station 35 kilometres west of Broken Hill.

“I feel most at home … the amazing thing is I’m finding it just as refreshing and just as inviting to be touring now as I’ve ever done,” Sayer said.

‘It beckons you’

For Sayer, music has a transformative power and an ability to improve lives in many ways.

“Especially in the world that we’re in at the minute, which is so mixed up,” he said.

“It’s a world that we have now, we don’t know what is fact and what is fiction.

“So I think that music is a great power to carry us into our own minds and make us make our own decisions, which is terribly important at the moment.”

With a backlog of 60 or so songs, Sayer plans to continue releasing music well into the future.

“I’ve been a very prolific worker. Whether that’s seen the light of day or not that doesn’t really matter,” he said.

“If you’ve got the material it calls to come out, it beckons you. It just says ‘come on, release me’.”

However, he was happy to admit not all of those songs were “all great”.

“I don’t even know if they’re great until, you know, you get a reaction back,” he said.

“That’s the weird thing about our business.”

When it comes to stage presence, Sayer believes performers can be “like a fine wine”, in that they only get better with age.

“You may not have the great voice you had [when you were younger], you may not have the energy … but you just get better,” he said.

“Without sounding egotistical, I think I’m performing better than I’ve ever performed now.”

Bash still getting bigger

Mundi Mundi Bash organiser Greg Donovan said the festival was generating a positive reputation within the music industry, which helped lure artists such as Sayer, The Cat Empire and Missy Higgins.

“They’re happy to come and play … but you do have to start working a long way out. The 2026 line-up is almost locked in,” Mr Donovan said.

“[Sayer] loves Australia and playing in Australia … and yeah, he was really happy to do that … he’s got so many great songs.”

For his part, Sayer said he was “so thrilled to be a part” of the bash and had enjoyed exploring the outback city of Broken Hill.

[8
64,63,134,67673,67676,67680,67675,67677,67678,67679,67674
post-91157","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-entertainment","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-entertainment","tag-leo-sayer","tag-mundi-mundi","tag-mundi-mundi-2025","tag-mundi-mundi-bash","tag-mundi-mundi-bash-music-festival","tag-music-festival","tag-outback-music-festival","tag-you-make-me-feel-like-dancing
["GET
