(Supplied: Wikipedia)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">For Owusu and Jet Set Radio Future, &#8220;it&#8217;s all sound-tracked by this pirate radio station hosted by DJ Professor K&#8221;, introducing him to cult acts like Bis, Bran Van 3000, and Cibo Matto.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s super abrasive [and] taught me ugly was also to be appreciated. I think of food: sour and bitter \u2026 can be used to create complex emotions and flavours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I feel the same way in music, ugly and abrasive can be used just as powerfully as sweet and lovely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;This game is the biggest creative influence in my life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Jet Set Radio Future&#8217;s lingering influence extends to Owusu&#8217;s latest album, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-29\/kneecap-ecca-vandal-genesis-owusu-mulga-bore-may-best-albums\/106732116\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106732116\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Red Star Wu &amp; The Worldwide Scourge<\/a>, which opens with a track titled Pirate Radio that skewers Donald Trump, Elon Musk and the degrading effects of &#8220;blue check mania&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Elsewhere, he takes aim at the manosphere, bible-bashing politicians and a paranoid, fragmented world growing apathetic to global atrocities in favour of absurdities served up in algorithms.<\/p>\n<p>Loading Instagram content<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The political bent sharpens Owusu&#8217;s lyrics, bolder and more urgent than the metaphors of his first two albums, where black dogs symbolised racism and depression, or an indestructible roach represented resilience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;My music has been political from the jump,&#8221; Owusu says. &#8220;A lot of my early music, there was still the veil of creative writing, make everything a metaphor and dress it up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;But in this day and age \u2026 we don&#8217;t have time for the dress-ups. This is what it is: I don&#8217;t want you to be able to hide from it or misunderstand in any way.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Genesis of Genesis Owusu<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">At age two, the artist born Kofi Owusu-Ansah emigrated with his Ghanaian family to Canberra.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;There was always an overarching layer of Ghanaian high life music, sizzling jollof on the stove.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">His home was filled with gospel music, via his choir leader mother, and the eclectic tastes of his father.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;[He] liked anything with an interesting album cover.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Each Saturday, &#8220;our cleaning day&#8221;, the chores were soundtracked by recent CD acquisitions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve always said it was Missy Elliott one weekend, Missy Higgins the next.&#8221;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Family photos of Ghanian-Australian mother and father posing on couch with their two sons\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/19b6fab6be0410fe1d33740bf6f62f95.png\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">A pre-fame Genesis Owusu with his mother, father and older brother. (Supplied: Genesis Owusu)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">When his older brother, Kojo, began making music, as Citizen Kay, from a makeshift home studio, &#8220;everyone assumed I would follow in [his] footsteps&#8221;, says Owusu.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;For a while, I pushed back.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Turning his focus to short stories and poetry only encouraged his older brother, who was &#8220;basically begging me to start rapping because he saw how the poetry would transition&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;For my birthday one year he gave me a shitty little mp3 player [with] a few of his beats on there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Clicking with one track that came up on shuffle, Owusu Jnr &#8220;started writing [his] first verse&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It became the debut from the Ansah Brothers, with a music video <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gtQ1fGWRcnw\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">filmed at the local golf course in Narrabundah<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/listen\/programs\/take-5\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hear extended episodes of Take 5 right here<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Dive even deeper into the music that has inspired your favourite artists on the Take 5 podcast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">At first, Owusu&#8217;s parents had a &#8220;very typical immigrant parent reaction&#8221; to their sons pursuing music: &#8220;You&#8217;re supposed to be a doctor, lawyer or engineer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Luckily for me, my older brother took the brunt of it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It wasn&#8217;t until TV and festival bookers came knocking, with a pay cheque, that their parents changed their tune. (ABC TV)<\/p>\n<p>Busting racial stereotypes<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Ansah Brothers were the only black kids in a &#8220;very white school [and] city&#8221;, says Owusu.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;There was a cultural idea of who black people were supposed to be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I had two choices at the time. I could be the Eddie Murphy funny-man or the 50 Cent gangster. Basically, the novelty or the threat.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Thankfully, he discovered alternatives: The swagger of hit-maker Pharrell Williams; the political hip hop of Lupe Fiasco; the outsider artistry of Outkast&#8217;s Andre 3000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">And the big one: Prince.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I&#8217;m in a lineage of black weirdo boundary-breakers, and Prince is one of the godfathers of that family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;He breaks so many rules that I had been taught as to what a song should be.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Whenever Owusu got stuck making his debut album, he&#8217;d think: &#8220;What would Prince do if he was a rapper from Canberra in the 2020s?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Smiling Ghanian-Australian man iin red jacket clutches three pointy silver award trophies\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/6904e7e5ff0284f2abbdc450168860de.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Winners are grinners. It was like &#8216;our community is changing \u2026&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It fulfils the mission I gave to myself at 10 years old to be a lifelong student and fierce boundary breaker.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It&#8217;s an artistic duty he plans on sticking to.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;A person that continues to strive for new experiences in every avenue.
