Best New Music – CityMag

We’ve rounded up Adelaide’s best new tracks of September, from a song with the sounds of the Takayna rainforest to punk rock anti-work sentiments.

Anya Anastasia – ‘Takayna’

Dedicated to the Takayna rainforest in northwest Tasmania, Anya Anastasia combines her ethereal indie pop sensibilities with the sounds of the rainforest.

On her Instagram, the singer/songwriter explained, “This song is a dedication to the bugs, critters, microbes and mycelium that connect in cycles in this old-growth rainforest,” which is expressed both through the song’s lyrics and the evocative sounds of the song.

The song is atmospheric and organic, with its acoustic textures, earthy mood, and tonal vocals taking influence from folk music through its connection with the land.

Even Hannah – ‘Lady Maria’

With its upbeat, rhythmic guitars and classic indie garage rock sensibilities, Even Hannah’s fifth single release ‘Lady Maria’ captures the youthful energy of the young Adelaide band.

The song has a summery surf rock tone, incorporating a little ‘70s/’80s jangle rock looseness (think The Byrds’ cover of Dylan’s Mr. Tambourine Man), but evokes a distinctly Australian atmosphere with its scruffy sound.

Regulars at Jive, UniBar, and The Austral, the band is not wasting any time putting their music around the city, and is cementing themselves as an upcoming name in Australia’s indie rock scene.

The Hazys – ‘This Is It’

The Hazys second EP Guessing Game is filled with punchy drums and vocals that jump from gentle to intense throughout the songs.

The EP opens with ‘Provoke’ featuring frenetic guitar sounds and raw vocals, and later in the EP is the punchy and energetic ‘This Is It’, which is rhythmic, guitar-led, and propelled by its drum line.

‘This Is It’ captures feelings of self-doubt and empowerment through its lyrics, with its final minute launching into a gritty guitar solo, until it ends on a quiet and sombre moment as the two leads sing ‘I won’t ask you for help, ‘cause that’ll be useless’.

The band is known for their unpredictable and captivating live shows, interacting with the crowd, swapping instruments, and capturing an authentic stage presence, which goes hand in hand with their genre-blending sounds.

PASH – ‘Suffer’

With a band name we’re surprised has not been taken yet, PASH incorporates nostalgic 80s glossiness with light and airy pop rock sounds.

‘Suffer’ is bright with its falsetto hook and chiming guitars, and despite the band’s distinct swagger, the lyrics are yearning, with lead singer Jett Gazley describing it as “a song about the intense suffering you experience when you lose something meaningful in your life”.

The song, with its new-wave textures and lovesick lyrics, is perfect for the dance floor, a workout mix, or a mournful walk thinking about the one who got away.

PASH are currently on tour around the country, playing Lion Arts Factory on October 15.

Stabbitha and the Knifey Wifeys – ‘Act Your Wage’

The third track on the band’s fourth LP Disgust, ‘Act Your Wage’ has big heavy riffs, explosive vocals, and an uncompromising political message.

The four-piece hardcore punk and heavy metal band formed in 2014 and have since received praise from feminist punk icon Kathleen Hanna for their powerful sound and unrelenting energy.

‘Act Your Wage’ blends workplace frustration with the counter-cultural energy behind punk, hardcore, and metal, producing ripping guitar solos and provocative vocals that provide catharsis amongst the anti-work sentiment of the song.

Technically, this is not a September release, released on August 31, but it’s good enough to be included.

The Disgust album launch is Saturday, October 3 at Jive Bar.

<p class="mb-4 font-serif text-lg sm:text-lg
