Notably, the “cover layer” for the inner screen will cost $19, which is good news, because it’s sure better than paying to replace the entire display if only the surface is damaged.

Interesting that the Nano Texture “cover layer” is covered (ha) separately from the inner display.

On the one hand, AppleCare+ is a non-negotiable on this phone. On the other hand, I’m actually pleased the deductibles are largely the same as other iPhones! pic.twitter.com/AM3HhIKhfV

— Quinn Nelson (@SnazzyLabs) October 1, 2026

Tech journalist Nicolas Lellouche chimed in, saying, “Apple told me during the event you would be able to replace the Nano texture cover anytime to reduce the crease or remove the damage. Technically speaking, you can remove it by yourself and have a brilliant display.”

“This is a GAME Changer if you prefer a glossy display on the iPhone Duo with much better contrast vs a less visible crease,” said YouTuber Vadim Yuryev, who runs the popular Max Tech channel that benchmarks mostly Apple devices.

With all due respect to the both of them, do not f*cking do that. Let me repeat it again: do not remove the nano-texture layer on the iPhone Duo’s inner screen yourself just to get a glossy screen.

Just because Apple’s repair gurus can professionally replace the cover layer doesn’t mean you, John Smith, should attempt it. I’m pretty sure when Apple’s VP of hardware engineering Kate Bergeron told content creator Angelina Siciliani Fendi that the cover layer is “actually replaceable, which is a really nice thing for the customer that you can peel off that layer and get a new one,” the exec wasn’t telling customers that they should remove the coating themselves.

Doing so would be very, very stupid even if you know how to use a heat gun properly. Not only would you risk potentially damaging the actual display and pixels underneath, but you would also be reducing the screen’s durability with each fold and unfold. It might also prevent Apple Pencil support (coming later this year) from working correctly. And even if Apple Pencil support still works, its tip would be damaging the screen with every contact.

While I get that some people are looking at the nano-texture layer on the screen and unhappy that it makes colors less vibrant and blacks not as deep, the layer is a fundamental part of the iPhone Duo—it protects the display while reducing the visibility of the crease.

It’s like people have learned absolutely nothing from when reviewers peeled off the film on the original Samsung Galaxy Fold, only to find out that it would destroy the screen. After those early incidents, Samsung included language during setup to remind customers not to remove the film on their own.

So let this be a PSA: unless you want to f*ck up your very expensive new foldable iPhone and then cry about it on social media, don’t peel off the nano-texture layer. Even if you do successfully remove it, also don’t apply an aftermarket glossy screen protector. You may end up breaking the display and maybe even borking the under-display FaceTime camera. If you want a foldable phone with a glossy inner screen, Samsung or Xiaomi would be happy to sell you one.

[6
1337,64,63,1341,455978,203,105
post-912841","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-technology","tag-apple","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-iphone","tag-iphone-duo","tag-mobile","tag-technology
["GET
