Mystery over missing NBL star; 36ers face huge call as Hawks swoop for ex-champ<\/a><\/p>\nFor JackJumpers head coach Scott Roth, at least his side walked away from the chaotic night with a win.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think I picked up three fouls where I was standing at some point or another during the game, but, you know, I just don\u2019t want to really comment on the refs, to be honest with you,\u201d Roth said post-game.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s just it is what it is and you have to move on and, you know, I\u2019ve said this many times about them. <\/p>\n
\u201cYou know, they have a thankless job.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou know, I get after them, obviously, when I need to get after them, but they\u2019re in a no-win situation and it\u2019s very difficult to referee games, especially over here.\u201d<\/p>\n
Roth also touched on another issue the league has faced in recent years, pointing towards the turnover of referees from season to season.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s not a lot of continuity within the referees,\u201d Roth said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re coming and going and changing, and so there\u2019s just a lot of stuff going on there. <\/p>\n
\u201cAnd for me, it\u2019s just best to stay away from all that. <\/p>\n
\u201cYou get what you deserve usually at the end of the day and some things come back around to you.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut they have a, I don\u2019t know why you want to be a referee, to be quite honest with that. <\/p>\n
\u201cWhat a job, unless you\u2019re in the NBA. So I just want to stay away from that one.\u201d<\/p>\n
But Roth would round out his press conference in typical fashion.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt the end of the day, a win is a win,\u201d Roth said.<\/p>\n
\u201cOne of the things I told the guys in about five or six days, no one\u2019s going to remember that game anyways, other than we got a W.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo there\u2019s a lot to take out of that game to learn just individually and our composure and playing with better poise and so on and so forth.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut, yeah, the game obviously got quite muddy. <\/p>\n
\u201cAnd, you know, a win\u2019s a win, and you can analyse it any way you want to, but we\u2019ll take any W we possibly can, especially this early in the season.\u201d<\/p>\n
Former NBL player Luke Cooper, who played for the Sydney Kings, was far less reserved when giving his thoughts on the game and the American referees who have come into the league in recent years.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese yanks have come in & completely over officiated our league,\u201d Cooper wrote on X.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy are they here?<\/p>\n
\u201cAre we really helping to grow the next generation of Australian referees by giving NBL opportunities to American refs instead, who have no idea about our league?<\/p>\n
\u201cEmbarrassing stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n
Former NBL Overtime host and commentator Cam Luke was also bemused by what he had watched.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt annoys me when 2 good teams try to interrupt and play a game of basketball on the same court that 3 people are having a whistle blowing comp,\u201d Luke posted on X.<\/p>\n
But Thursday night\u2019s controversial game wasn\u2019t the first time the JackJumpers have found themselves at the centre of an officiating talking point this season.<\/p>\n
Just last round, Tasmania was on the other side of the equation following a controversial no-call late in its loss to the Cairns Taipans.<\/p>\n
The JackJumpers trailed 91-87 with 8.2 seconds remaining when Dakota Mathias appeared to be fouled on a three-point attempt.<\/p>\n
A whistle would have sent Mathias to the line for three free throws.<\/p>\n
Instead, there was no call, and the commentary team could hardly believe it.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe got assaulted in the corner,\u201d Derek Rucker said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWow. Keanu Pinder playing with four fouls gets away with this,\u201d Joel Peterson said.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo way\u2026 no way,\u201d Pete Hooley added.<\/p>\n
ESPN\u2019s Olgun Uluc also reacted to the missed call on X, saying the issues stretched beyond one moment.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe officiating to start NBL27 has unfortunately been pretty dreadful,\u201d Uluc wrote.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo many new refs; and we\u2019re seeing soft calls on rebound contests, any contact on drives, and any time someone falls when getting clipped by a (legal or not) screen.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis no-call is the icing on the cake.\u201d<\/p>\n
As Roth said on Thursday night, \u201csome things come back around to you\u201d.<\/p>\n
One round after the JackJumpers were left wondering where the whistle was, they survived a game where it seemingly never stopped.<\/p>\n
