David Corenswet<\/a> as Superman<\/a> was not an idea that just dropped out of thin air. In fact, that idea has been gestating for at least six years<\/a>. The actor even told Men\u2019s Health writer Evan Romano<\/a> at the time in 2020 that it was his \u201cpie-in-the-sky\u201d dream to play the ultimate comic book hero.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, the whole point of \u2018pie-in-the-sky\u2019 is that it doesn\u2019t happen too often,\u201d he previously said, adding, \u201cI just always felt like Superman<\/a> was both under-appreciated and over-simplified, and there was a lot of interesting stuff that could happen with it. But that\u2019s all just in my mind. There\u2019s nothing outside of that, at least that I know of.\u201d <\/p>\n

Romano told Corenswet that he could see him playing the role, to which the now-Superman, then-mortal replied, \u201cGreat to know\u2026 I\u2019ll take that in writing. Maybe we can start a petition.\u201d<\/p>\n

The ambition, obviously, was realized \u2014\u00a0and resulted in a so-far $400+ million box office<\/a> bonanza, which includes the $125 million opening weekend \u201cSuperman\u201d had domestically and another $57.2 million in North America this weekend. Much of the movie\u2019s success has been credited to Corenswet, whom writer\/director James Gunn<\/a> said he stumbled upon when watching the 2022 film \u201cPearl.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cI actually was watching this movie, which is great. It\u2019s a great movie\u2026 and I saw a character whose name I think is just the Projectionist in the movie, and I\u2019m like, \u2018That guy looks like he could possibly be Superman,’\u201d Gunn said on Konbini<\/a>. \u201cI looked up his name on IMDb and said, \u2018Can you bring this guy in?\u2019 And so they brought David in. There were two people I asked to be brought in<\/a>, maybe more, but one guy I thought was most likely to be Superman.\u201d<\/p>\n

But it turns out that other guy, Gunn recalled, \u201cwasn\u2019t very good.\u201d \u201cAnd then David Corenswet, I watched him, and he was amazing,\u201d Gunn said, adding he was particularly impressed with the actor\u2019s comedic chops. What Gunn might not have been prepared for is Corenswet\u2019s inquisitive nature. In an interview with GQ<\/a>, Gunn talked about working on set with his Superman.<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes his questions are great, and I totally see where they make him better, and because they make him better, they make the movie better,\u201d Gunn shared. \u201cBut every once in a while, it\u2019s just one question too many, and it\u2019s like,\u00a0\u2018Oh, my God, just, David, stop, stop, for a minute.\u2019 And the beautiful thing about me and David is that he knows that about himself and he knows where my limits are.
