{"id":914575,"date":"2026-10-03T11:04:19","date_gmt":"2026-10-03T11:04:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/914575\/"},"modified":"2026-10-03T11:04:19","modified_gmt":"2026-10-03T11:04:19","slug":"royal-childrens-hospital-probes-risk-of-exposure-to-toxic-chemotherapy-drugs-in-melbourne","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/914575\/","title":{"rendered":"Royal Children\u2019s Hospital probes risk of exposure to toxic chemotherapy drugs in Melbourne"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Staff at a major <a class=\"css-1lg16vp-StyledTextLink ezegcyi0\" data-link-type=\"article-inline\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/7news.com.au\/news\/melbourne?page=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Melbourne<\/a> hospital may have been exposed to chemotherapy toxins for years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Sterile gloves which do not meet the current global standard for guaranteed protection against cytotoxic agents have been used in cancer care areas of The Royal Children\u2019s Hospital (RCH).<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">The gloves, which are not rated for chemotherapy, were used for patients with latex allergies in a range of clinical applications, the Victorian Department of Health says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-178igh4-StyledParagraph e1s06mna1\">Know the news with the 7NEWS app: <a class=\"css-h2mhmv-StyledContextualLink e1s06mna0\" href=\"https:\/\/7news.com.au\/app?utm_source=7NEWS&amp;utm_medium=contextual-link-app&amp;utm_campaign=7news-app\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Download today Arrow<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Nurses had used the non-chemotherapy-rated gloves in high-risk areas including the Kookaburra cancer ward, intensive care units and the hospital-in-the-home program, where chemotherapy agents are administered, the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF) (Victorian Branch) Secretary Maddy Harradence told 7NEWS.com.au.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">The hospital is now reviewing the matter, and testing the gloves it had been using to confirm whether workers were exposed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">The international standard for gloves used to handle chemotherapy chemicals was updated about a decade ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Harradence said the ANMF understood the hospital, or certain sections of it, had been aware of the change in standards as far back as 2016.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cWe don\u2019t know why all of the gloves were not replaced but clearly there has been a system failure and breakdown in communication,\u201d Harradence said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">The RCH was still using the historic standard of gloves when the\u00a0issue was first escalated to hospital leadership in late August.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cAfter learning of this, we removed these gloves and replaced them with sterile gloves that meet the international standard for handling cytotoxic agents,\u201d an RCH spokesperson told 7NEWS.com.au.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cThe Royal Children\u2019s Hospital (RCH) has been open and transparent with staff about the potential risks of sterile gloves historically used for handling cytotoxic agents (such as chemotherapy).\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/bc886fac8085d5048d505d710be652fc109293a3.jpg\" alt=\"There are fears gloves used at a major hospital may not have provided adequate protection for staff. (James Ross\/AAP PHOTOS) Credit: AAP<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Harradence described the situation as \u201ccompletely unacceptable\u201d and said affected workers had been left with significant uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cOur members are dealing with a great deal of uncertainty because we don\u2019t yet know what the risk is or who has been impacted,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cThey\u2019re angry, distressed and disappointed that their safety and health may have been compromised. They have more questions than answers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">The union has escalated the issue to WorkSafe Victoria, the office of the Chief Nurse and the Victorian Department of Health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cWe want to know exactly what the risk is and that this is not happening in any other healthcare facility,\u201d Harradence said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Cytotoxic drugs are used to target cancerous cells in patients receiving chemotherapy, but they are known to be highly toxic to non-target cells.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">For staff who prepare and administer the drugs without proper personal protection equipment (PPE), exposure to the chemicals can lead to a range of health issues including fertility changes, fetal loss, liver damage, and genetic mutations, according to the <a class=\"css-1lg16vp-StyledTextLink ezegcyi0\" data-link-type=\"article-inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.worksafe.vic.gov.au\/cytotoxic-medicines-introduction-cytotoxic-medicines\">WorkSafe Victoria<\/a> website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Harradence said it was critical that healthcare workers handling chemotherapy drugs use chemotherapy-rated PPE that is not permeable to the chemicals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cThese are lifesaving drugs, but they\u2019re also amongst the most toxic chemicals if you don\u2019t need them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">The hospital is now testing whether any staff might have been exposed to cytotoxic agents as a result of the gloves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cWe are now engaging an independent organisation to test and assess the protective performance of the previous sterile gloves and any potential exposure risk to staff,\u201d the RCH spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe understand the concern and uncertainty this has caused, and we are committed to being open with affected staff about what we know and what we are doing to find answers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">The ANMF said it expected the independent testing, involving occupational disease physicians and toxicologists, to provide a clearer picture of the potential risk in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cIt\u2019s a very difficult time for staff left in limbo while they wait for answers,\u201d Harradence said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cWhen we understand more about the level of exposure risk for our members, we expect there may be a need for comprehensive testing including contact tracing, ongoing monitoring and communication.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cOf course, we hope that the level of risk is minimal, but we just don\u2019t know yet what it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">The hospital said that it would make more information known to staff as further details come to light, and continue to support its employees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">WorkSafe Victoria is also involved in the ongoing investigations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">The safety regulator has inspectors dedicated to ensuring duty holders in the health industry comply with their obligations by inspecting workplaces, providing advice and information, and taking enforcement action when neccessary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cWorkSafe is making inquiries to ensure health and safety risks are being adequately addressed and determine whether further action is required,\u201d a WorkSafe spokeswoman told 7NEWS.com.au.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"css-6fiqrm-StyledLinkWrapper e1y7kr221\" href=\"https:\/\/7news.com.au\/entertainment\/halle-berry-faces-shocking-allegations-from-ex-olivier-martinez-in-bitter-custody-dispute-over-their-son-maceo--c-22957345\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>Halle Berry faces shocking allegations from ex in bitter custody dispute <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-xp0jgm-StyledTimeToRead e1y7kr223\">2 min read<\/p>\n<p><\/a><a class=\"css-6fiqrm-StyledLinkWrapper e1y7kr221\" href=\"https:\/\/7news.com.au\/travel\/air-aviation\/passenger-reveals-the-lie-he-told-his-children-as-flydubai-plane-plunged-amid-stabbing-attack-c-22956893\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>Passenger\u2019s lie to kids as plane plummeted amid stabbing attack<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-xp0jgm-StyledTimeToRead e1y7kr223\">4 min read<\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Staff at a major Melbourne hospital may have been exposed to chemotherapy toxins for years.
