Work has begun today on an $80 million Burnside Hospital Health Precinct, with Health Minister Blair Boyer and Burnside Hospital CEO Rebecca Badcock in Toorak Gardens today to mark the milestone.<\/p>\n

The new hospital will expand the existing chemotherapy treatment services at Burnside, including installing a new \u201clinear accelerator\u201d machine that provides a specialised way to deliver radiation therapy by targeting tumours with X-rays or electrons from outside the body.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis represents a significant new piece of health infrastructure for South Australia that will meet the needs of patients in key areas of care, particularly in comprehensive cancer services and day surgery capacity,\u201d Health Minister Blair Boyer said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis project will also ensure more residents in Adelaide\u2019s east can get the care they need closer to home.\u201d<\/p>\n

The new build will have two new operating theatres that can cater for around 3500 additional patient procedures per year when fully functional and would bring the total operating theatres in the hospital to seven.<\/p>\n

Medical specialists working in the current hospital will move into larger rooms in the new building, which also includes a fertility service.<\/p>\n

There will be three levels of underground parking, with about 150 car spaces, and about 250 jobs will be supported throughout the project\u2019s construction.<\/p>\n
