CLEVELAND \u2014 Downtown Cleveland buzzed with Guardians fans who came to root for their team during the first round of the playoffs.<\/p>\n
Many of the fans have long emotional connections to the team.<\/p>\n
Cathy Arnett and her sisters grew up going to Guardians games with their mother. Now Arnett lives in California, but she never lost any love for the Guardians.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cMy mom and I used to have season tickets, but she died on the 20th, so we brought her with us today,\u201d Arnett said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
A homecoming trip for her mother\u2019s funeral turned into a chance to get together with her sisters and all attend a game in their mother\u2019s honor.\u00a0<\/p>\n
For many Clevelanders, baseball is woven into their lives.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThey help our pride in Cleveland, I mean it\u2019s amazing that we are such a small market, and this team has done so incredibly well over the years \u2014 we\u2019re almost spoiled at this point,\u201d said Kris Treu, there with his daughter, Britta Treu.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The family has been Guardians fans for decades, choosing to go to watch the first game of the series on a special day.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cToday\u2019s my birthday, actually, and there\u2019s no better way to spend my birthday,\u201d Britta said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Fans are seeking a deep playoff run. Fan John Newman said the guardians will go \u201call the way. No doubt. No doubt. They\u2019re hot right at the perfect time.\u201d<\/p>\n
The energy at game one was high, with the Guardians being cheered on by fans who were able to be there and those that weren\u2019t.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe got tickets so we can celebrate mom today, so we feel like she\u2019s rooting for them, she\u2019s cheering for them and yes, we\u2019re gonna win,\u201d Arnett said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
