Now, boys. I have a great deal of respect for both of your opinions. Russell, I completely understand the appeal of keeping things simple, and Zach, your argument for the satisfying symmetry of the Date Power Reserve is strong<\/a>. However, unfortunately, you are both way off the mark.<\/p>\n

Because sitting above the pair of them is the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Chronometre Perpetual Calendar. The big cheese. The mac daddy. The one she told you not to worry about. If we are choosing a favourite from a collection made by a manufacture routinely referred to as the Watchmaker of Watchmakers, then I want to see some watchmaking in action. And a perpetual calendar feels like a pretty convincing place to start.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s another reason I think this is the sweet spot of the new Master Control Chronometre family, too. Jaeger-LeCoultre has somehow squeezed all of this complication into the exact same 39mm diameter and 9.2mm thickness as Zach\u2019s Date Power Reserve. You gain a perpetual calendar, a moon phase and considerably more going on across the dial, and the watch remains comfortably below 10mm thick. That, for me, changes the conversation.<\/p>\n

The case<\/p>\n

At 39mm across and 9.2mm thick, the Perpetual Calendar sits right in the contemporary sweet spot. Those dimensions already worked extremely well on the Date Power Reserve, and they feel even more impressive here given what is packed inside. The proportions also suit the watch\u2019s personality. There\u2019s enough diameter for the perpetual calendar display to breathe, while the slimness preserves the elegance that has always defined the Master Control line. On the wrist, it feels suitably substantial for an integrated-bracelet sports watch without becoming broad or bulky, and the thin bezel helps maximise the amount of dial available.<\/p>\n

Finishing follows the rest of the collection, with broad brushed surfaces joined by polished bevels that pick up the light around the case. Water resistance is 50 metres, which keeps this firmly in daily-wear territory without pretending to be something it isn\u2019t. Then there is the choice of materials. The stainless-steel model gets the blue-grey dial shared across the collection, while the 18k pink gold version goes considerably harder with a bronze-coloured dial and a fully integrated pink gold bracelet. The steel watch is probably the easier one to live with day to day. The gold version has a presence that feels particularly appropriate for a perpetual calendar.<\/p>\n

The dial<\/p>\n

This is where my argument really starts to gather momentum. Russell favours the clean openness of the Date. Zach makes a good case for the symmetry created by the two displays on the Date Power Reserve. But the Perpetual Calendar fills almost every available section of the dial and somehow still manages to look composed. Four displays are arranged around the centre: month and year at 12 o\u2019clock, day at 3, date at 9, and the moon phase at 6. It is a lot of information to fit into 39mm, especially once you add the applied indices, dauphine hands and peripheral minute track. JLC has managed the spacing exceptionally well, and that complexity gives the watch much more visual depth.<\/p>\n

The individual counters help enormously. Each uses an opaline outer section and an azur\u00e9 centre, creating subtle texture changes across the dial instead of relying on colour alone to separate all that information. On the steel model, those details sit against the blue-grey gradient sunray finish, which becomes darker towards the perimeter. The pink gold reference uses a warm bronze-coloured sunray dial that brings the case, bracelet and dial into the same tonal family.<\/p>\n

Then you get the moon phase at six. On the pink gold model, the moon is rendered in hammered gold leaf, with the steel version receiving a hammered platinum leaf treatment. It is a small detail, and exactly the sort of detail that earns its place on a watch like this. There is undoubtedly more happening here than on either of its siblings. That is precisely why it works for me. A perpetual calendar should give you something to explore. It should remind you that there\u2019s an awful lot of mechanical organisation taking place underneath the dial, but still manage to do it in a way that retains some elegance.<\/p>\n

The bracelet<\/p>\n

The bracelet is the same basic three-row integrated design found throughout the new Master Control Chronometre collection, and it remains one of the strongest parts of the whole family. Its polished, angular centre elements take their cues from the dauphine hands and trapezoidal hour markers, giving the bracelet a visual connection to the dial. Brushed surfaces carry most of the structure, with the polished sections adding just enough flash as the wrist moves.<\/p>\n

The folding clasp also offers a clever winter\/summer adjustment. The final links on either side can be extended to give the bracelet some extra breathing room without reaching for a tool, which is exactly the kind of practical detail you want on a watch intended to live on a bracelet. It becomes particularly impressive on the pink gold model. A fully integrated precious-metal bracelet carries a very different kind of weight and presence on the wrist, and paired with the bronze dial and perpetual calendar display, the whole watch feels suitably lavish.<\/p>\n

The movement<\/p>\n

Of course, this is the reason we are all here.<\/p>\n

Visible through the sapphire caseback is Jaeger-LeCoultre\u2019s automatic calibre 868, measuring only 4.72mm thick despite containing 332 components and 46 jewels. It runs at 4Hz and delivers a healthy 70 hours of power reserve, which means JLC has maintained the same autonomy offered elsewhere in the collection while asking the movement to do considerably more work. The perpetual calendar keeps track of the day, date, month and year while accounting for the varying lengths of months and leap years. It also features a moon phase display, and a single corrector on the side of the case handles adjustments, making what is inherently a complicated mechanism remarkably straightforward to live with.<\/p>\n

Like the rest of the new Master Control Chronometre family, calibre 868 is COSC-certified before undergoing Jaeger-LeCoultre\u2019s new High Precision Guarantee testing. The HPG programme subjects the completed watch to simulations involving wrist positions, pressure, temperature changes and shocks, while also setting standards for movement decoration. There\u2019s plenty to inspect through the back, too, including C\u00f4tes de Gen\u00e8ve, polished screw heads, bevelled edges and an openworked 22k pink gold winding rotor. It feels appropriate that the most mechanically ambitious watch of the three also gives you the most to talk about once you turn it over.<\/p>\n

The verdict<\/p>\n

Russell wants purity. Zach wants balance. Apparently, it seems I want everything. And I think that makes sense with this particular collection. Jaeger-LeCoultre can make an extremely good time-and-date watch. Plenty of manufactures can. JLC\u2019s appeal has always stretched further into serious movement construction and complicated watchmaking, and the Perpetual Calendar gives this new integrated Master Control platform the chance to show exactly what the manufacture can do.<\/p>\n

Most importantly, you pay almost no physical penalty for it. The Perpetual Calendar measures the same 39mm across and 9.2mm thick as the Date Power Reserve. It retains the same 50 metres of water resistance, the same 70-hour power reserve and the same beautifully executed bracelet. All of that machinery has been folded into a watch that remains genuinely slim and wearable. The Date is cleaner. The Date Power Reserve is beautifully symmetrical. I will happily give Russell and Zach both of those points. If I\u2019m going to choose one watch from the new Master Control Chronometre family, I want the one that feels most distinctly Jaeger-LeCoultre. Give me the four sub-dials. Give me the moon phase. Give me 332 components tucked inside a 9.2mm-thick case.<\/p>\n
