Outgoing Greens leader Larissa Waters clashed with Sarah Hanson-Young on the day of the leadership vote after she was taken to task for backing a bloke as leader.<\/p>\n
News.com.au has confirmed that Senator Waters, who resigned over for health reasons relating to kidney disease, spoke with Greens Senator Hanson-Young on the day of the vote.<\/p>\n
In that conversation, Senator Waters told Senator Hanson-Young that she was backing NSW Senator David Shoebridge as leader.<\/p>\n
Reports of the frank conversation between Senator Waters and Senator Hanson-Young have subsequently filtered out.<\/p>\n
Colleagues claim Senator Hanson-Young complained that Senator Waters should back a female candidate and that the \u201csisterhood\u201d didn\u2019t exist.<\/p>\n
Party insiders argue that Senator Water\u2019s decision to act on behalf of factions in backing Senator Shoebridge was a decisive factor in blocking the two female candidates \u2013 Senator Hanson-Young and Senator Mehreen Faruqi \u2013 from claiming the top job.<\/p>\n
Senator Waters\u2019 critics maintain she was only installed in the job replacing Adam Bandt in May, 2025 after she was tapped by the factions to back NSW Senator Mehreen Faruqi.<\/p>\n
Senator Waters is believed to have marshalled leadership votes from Queensland in favour of Senator Shoebridge blocking Senator Mehreen Faruqi and Senator Hanson-Young.<\/p>\n
\u2018Buckle up\u2019 prediction<\/p>\n
Senator Waters is on medical leave. Senator Hanson-Young declined to comment on the discussions when contacted by news.com.au.<\/p>\n
She previously put out a social media post discussing the divisions in the party room.<\/p>\n
\u201cGod, politics can be brutal,\u201d she said in a video posted to social media, after a bushwalk on Thursday.<\/p>\n
\u201cFriendships made and lost, but it takes all types. We all care so deeply about the future of this country and the future of the planet.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAustralians deserve an optimistic, caring, and defiant progressive force, and I won\u2019t be backing down,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m sorry we couldn\u2019t pull it off this time, but buckle up, because we\u2019ve got a lot of work to do.\u201d<\/p>\n
Her comments come a day after Senator Faruqi demanded the party\u2019s rank-and-file members be given a say in future leadership elections.<\/p>\n
In the wake of the leadership vote Senator Shoebridge has played down party tensions after defeated leadership aspirant Mehreen Faruqi criticised his election.<\/p>\n
Senator Faruqi quit her role as deputy leader to unsuccessfully run for the party\u2019s top job on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Following the ballot, she revealed she did not recontest the deputy leadership because she believed she could better pursue \u201cradical action outside the constraints of the leadership team\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery single member of the federal Greens party room is a basically a frontbencher \u2013 taking on hard portfolios, making those portfolios work, contributing to the broader goals,\u201d Senator Shoebridge told News24 in response.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd I would hope that every single member of our federal party room feels like they have the opportunity to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u2018Toxic relationship\u2019<\/p>\n
But behind the scenes the relationship between Senator Shoebridge and Senator Faruqi has long been regarded as somewhere between toxic and non-existent.<\/p>\n
The bad blood appears to date back to Senator Faruqi switch from NSW politics to federal politics when she rolled Senator Shoebridge\u2019s friend and mentor Lee Rhiannon from the top of the Senate ticket.<\/p>\n
At the time, a vicious campaign against Lee Rhiannon unfolded amid tensions over Malcolm Turnbull over his Gonski 2.0 schools funding plan.<\/p>\n
She angered colleagues by authorising a leaflet campaigning against the reform package, while Senator Di Natale was negotiating with the government.<\/p>\n
She was ultimately excluded from the Greens federal party room before former federal leader Bob Brown declared \u201cit\u2019s the end of Lee\u2019s reign, the end is nigh\u201d.<\/p>\n
Senator Faruqi won the 2017 preselection skirmish, securing the top spot on the ticket and effectively ousting Senator Rhiannon who later resigned from Parliament.<\/p>\n
\u201cF— you!\u201d \u2013 the day tensions boiled over in the Greens<\/p>\n
Around the same time, tensions in the NSW Greens boiled over with Newtown MP Jenny Leong storming out of a party room after reportedly yelling \u201cF— you!\u201d at David Shoebridge who was then a state MP.<\/p>\n
