A community morning tea held at the Paynesville Community Hub on Thursday, September 24, brought local residents and healthcare providers together to mark Dementia Action Week and spark important local conversations surrounding dementia care.

Hosted by Inner Peace Nursing and In Home Care, the event supported Dementia Australia’s national campaign urging all Australians to break down barriers and start talking openly about the condition.

Guest speaker Peter Taylor, who is living with Parkinson’s disease, addressed attendees on the profound health and social benefits of remaining actively connected to the local community. Drawing from his own daily life, Mr Taylor highlighted his positive experiences as a member of the Paynesville Men’s Shed and as a dedicated volunteer with the Paynesville Football Club.

The morning featured a series of informative presentations from regional healthcare and service organisations. Representatives from the East Gippsland Sleep Clinic discussed the critical role quality sleep plays in cognitive health and general well-being, while an East Gippsland Shire Council Recreation Centre representative outlined specialised fitness and active living programs available for community members over 65 years old.

In addition, local business Bairnsdale Mobility and Hire showcased a variety of specialized gadgets and assistive technologies designed to help individuals maintain their safety and independence within their own homes.
