Christa Pike\u2019s legal team have revealed the convicted murderer remains critically ill in hospital following a botched execution attempt in Tennessee on September 30.<\/p>\n
The 50-year-old requires a ventilator to keep her alive and \u201cmay not fully recover\u201d according to lawyer Stephen Ferrell.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe don\u2019t really know the prognosis yet and may not know for several days,\u201d Mr Ferrell told CNN.<\/p>\n

By continuing you agree to our Terms<\/a> and Privacy Policy<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cIt remains to be seen what the future is.\u201d<\/p>\n Mr Ferrell said he had not personally seen Pike since the attempt at ending her life as her hospital room is heavily guarded.<\/p>\n However, medical reports explain the use of seven needles during the execution attempt which left her arm \u201cswollen, burned and blistered.\u201d<\/p>\n The drug pentobarbital was administered intravenously to Pike in numerous doses as a supposed lethal injection.<\/p>\n Pentobarbital is a barbiturate used to slow the central nervous system, suppressing breathing and executive function of the heart.<\/p>\n However, Pike continued breathing throughout the administration of the injections, including being conscious enough to tell prison guards, \u201cmy arm feels like it\u2019s about to burst open,\u201d before asking \u201cdoes this happen like that?\u201d<\/p>\n Witnesses to the attempted execution report she then fell asleep and began \u201csnoring loudly\u201d before Pike\u2019s legal team were granted an emergency motion to cease any further attempts at ending her life.<\/p>\n \u201cI think one of the main things that will leave this up in the air for a while is the fact that we don\u2019t know what the prognosis is, as in, the long-term prognosis. If she recovers, she may not fully recover,\u201d Mr Ferrell said.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd there may be issues about her competence.
