On debut night in February 2025, days after a shocking trade out of Dallas, Doncic praised LeBron James, calling his basketball IQ “insane” after the two connected on a length-of-the-floor assist.

He arrived calling the Lakers a new home, with James still the established face of the franchise. More than a year and a half later, with James gone to Philadelphia, a different two-word answer from Luka Doncic has reignited the comparison between the two stars, and not everyone has read it the same way.

At Lakers media day, a reporter asked Doncic how it felt to lead the team with James no longer around. “Uh, it feels great,” Doncic said. “Obviously it’s a new challenge, you know. Uh, I was in this position in my career a lot of times. Uh, so it’s not new to me. Uh, but I feel great. I feel excited and I’m, like I said, I’m ready to go. It’s been a long time since I played basketball, so I’m ready. Okay, let’s be fair.”

The clip spread quickly, with plenty of fans reading the response as a shot at James, a suggestion that Doncic was relieved to finally have the Lakers to himself. Doncic didn’t walk it back in the moment, but he also spoke warmly about James elsewhere in the same press conference, telling ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, “Playing with LeBron was amazing. There are a lot of things I learned from him, and we all know who LeBron James is.”

Lakers legend Byron Scott addressed the controversy on his own show, Byron Scott’s Fast Break. He offered a more charitable interpretation than the one spreading online.

“I don’t think he meant, you know, it feels great that LeBron’s gone and this is my team,” Scott said. “He did kind of, um, in that statement, say the fact that I’ve been in this position before, where it’s been his team, so to speak.”

“But I don’t think Luka meant anything by that, as far as throwing a shot at, you know, hey, I’m glad LeBron’s not here and this is my team,” he added. “I don’t, I don’t think — now I know a lot of people out there are going to take it that way, but I don’t think that’s what he meant.”

Doncic has led teams before. First as a franchise cornerstone in Dallas and now in his first full season as the unquestioned face of the Lakers, his answer read as much as relief at a familiar role as it does commentary on James.

He’s also entering the season with a clean bill of health. He said that his hamstring is fully recovered after a deliberately slow offseason recovery, following a 2025-26 season where he averaged 33.5 points, 7.7 rebounds and 8.3 assists in 64 games.

Whether or not Doncic meant anything by his comments, Scott’s defense reframed the moment as a star embracing a new chapter rather than one star taking a swing at another on his way out the door.

The two will get a chance to settle the storyline on the court when Philadelphia and Los Angeles meet for the first time this season.

Luka Doncic’s first comments in a Lakers uniform were about the opposite situation he’s in now.
