{"id":917277,"date":"2026-10-05T18:50:20","date_gmt":"2026-10-05T18:50:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/917277\/"},"modified":"2026-10-05T18:50:20","modified_gmt":"2026-10-05T18:50:20","slug":"nasa-officials-reveal-new-prima-space-telescope-will-peer-into-the-unknown-by-exploring-mysteries-of-the-electromagnetic-spectrum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/917277\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA Officials Reveal New PRIMA Space Telescope Will Peer into the Unknown by Exploring Mysteries of the Electromagnetic Spectrum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/?s=NASA\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA<\/a> is moving forward with plans to launch a new space telescope that will search for clues to some of the most <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/nasas-chandra-discovers-a-mysterious-new-class-of-cosmic-objects-that-could-solve-two-longstanding-mysteries\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">perplexing mysteries<\/a> of the cosmos by peering into largely unexplored regions of the electromagnetic spectrum.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The American space agency officially revealed its new PRobe far-Infrared Mission for Astrophysics, or <a href=\"https:\/\/prima.ipac.caltech.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">PRIMA<\/a>, in late September, which will help <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/category\/astronomy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">astronomers<\/a> scour the cosmos for clues to the origins of planets, stars, galaxies, black holes, and even the source of water on Earth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PRIMA was selected to enter Phase B of its development, a milestone that will significantly advance the preliminary scope of the mission\u2019s design and technology development ahead of its eventual confirmation review.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If approved, PRIMA will be on course for a 2033 launch, with current plans for a five-year mission.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe PRIMA mission is humanity\u2019s next window into the deep universe,\u201d said Nicky Fox, associate administrator of NASA\u2019s Science Mission Directorate, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/news-release\/nasa-selects-far-infrared-telescope-as-first-in-new-mission-class\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a> on September 23. \u201cIt will unveil the obscure across cosmic time to better understand the formation of planets, stars, black holes, and even how water on Earth came to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>PRIMA: Closing the Gap Between Optical and Radio Telescopes<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Driving the PRIMA mission will be the space observatory\u2019s powerhouse 5.9-foot telescope, which will be used to conduct surveys of the universe at far-infrared wavelengths.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a key component of the PRIMA mission, as NASA plans for the telescope\u2019s infrared capabilities to help bridge the observational gap between existing infrared observatories like the James Webb Space Telescope and radio telescopes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By its design, the far-infrared capabilities PRIMA is to be equipped for will be able to reveal radiant energy that other observatories are not able to detect. This will allow PRIMA to investigate how planets beyond our solar system form, as well as how the black holes at the center of galaxies have evolved throughout time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Investigations into the accumulation of cosmic dust and heavy elements throughout the universe, and how they populated over time, will also be possible with PRIMA\u2019s far-infrared observations.<\/p>\n<p>NASA\u2019s New Probe Explorers<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PRIMA is also set to break new ground by becoming part of NASA\u2019s new Probe Explorers class, representing the first mission under the new initiative.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/avi-loeb-and-the-dods-chief-uap-investigator-sean-kirkpatrick-say-solving-aerial-mysteries-requires-known-physics\/\" class=\"mask-img\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"120\" height=\"120\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Avi-Loeb-1-120x120.jpg\" class=\"attachment-codetipi-15zine-120-120 size-codetipi-15zine-120-120 wp-post-image lazyload\" alt=\"UAP\"  data- style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 120px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 120\/120;\"\/>\t\t\t<\/a><br \/>\n\t\t&#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t&#13;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Probe Explorers are the result of a recommendation by the National Academies\u2019 2020 astronomy and astrophysics Decadal Survey, and will be part of NASA\u2019s long-running Explorers Program, which has its origins with <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/explorer-1\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the launch of Explorer 1<\/a>, the first U.S.-launched satellite, in 1958.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NASA has said a mission team at its Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, will manage the PRIMA mission, with contributions from experts at Goddard Space Flight Center, Marshall Space Flight Center, and several international collaborators.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, the discoveries under PRIMA are anticipated to broaden the scope of NASA\u2019s cosmic investigations by complementing current efforts made possible by Webb, as well as the forthcoming observations by the <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/nasas-roman-space-telescope-could-soon-unravel-the-greatest-mysteries-of-the-cosmos-heres-what-to-expect\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Roman Space Telescope<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By expanding the agency\u2019s ability to examine the cosmos across different wavelengths, the launch of the PRIMA space telescope will be poised to lead future observations that will provide potentially crucial information about how the universe as we know it came to be.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Micah Hanks is the Editor-in-Chief and Co-Founder of The Debrief.
