So that may mean we need to alter what had been our previous plan.”

Russell described what he experienced as a “sudden failure” as he acknowledged that this had been a season where things were getting away from him.

Asked about any remaining title hopes, Russell said: “I knew that if I wanted to come back in the championship, I needed luck on my side, it wouldn’t just be good performances.

“But here we are. Not only do I not have luck on my side, I’ve got bad luck on my side. I’ll just keep fighting weekend by weekend, but of course it’s exceptionally unlikely.”

George Russell could face a further “double whammy” hit following his Malaysia retirement if his Mercedes Formula 1…

[573
64,63,817,813,816,85
post-917381","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-formula-1","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-f1","tag-formula-1","tag-formula1","tag-sports
["GET
