Oct 6 (Reuters) – Italian cyclist \u2060Giulio Ciccone has challenged the photo-finish verdict that \u2060saw him lose the European Championships road race to \u200cRemco Evenepoel in Slovenia on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Ciccone overtook Evenepoel with just a few hundred metres remaining and looked set for victory before he was reeled \u200bin by the Belgian, with the \u2060pair wheel-to-wheel as they crossed \u2060the finish line.<\/p>\n
“The title was decided by a margin of \u20600.0028 \u200cseconds, which is 2.8 thousandths of a second,” Ciccone wrote on social media on Monday. <\/p>\n
“I’ve watched the \u2060available footage hundreds of times and, in the \u200bshots where \u200cthe finish line is visible, I keep seeing something \u2060I can’t \u200bsquare with that verdict.”<\/p>\n
The European Cycling Union, which organises the European Road Cycling Championships, did not immediately respond to a request \u2060for comment outside regular business hours in \u200bSwitzerland.<\/p>\n
Ciccone, 31, said the criteria used to interpret photo finishes had already been explained to him by officials and his federation’s \u2060technical staff.<\/p>\n
“I’m not asking for another explanation,” he added.<\/p>\n
“I’m asking to see the photo finish that matches the actual finish line exactly. I’d like to see, clearly and beyond \u200bdoubt, our two wheels crossing at the \u2060exact point where the regulations say the finish is determined.”<\/p>\n
Lidl-Trek \u200brider Ciccone also said Evenepoel had \u200craced “like a champion”.<\/p>\n
“My respect for him \u200bis enormous and has never been in question.”<\/p>\n
