Image: XPB Images

Russell left the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia 84 points behind his Mercedes teammate after a late power unit failure turned what had been shaping up to be a valuable podium into his third retirement of the season.

The setback came just one week after Russell had breathed new life into his title hopes by winning in Azerbaijan, cutting Antonelli’s advantage to 66 points after the Italian finished fifth.

Instead of carrying that momentum into Singapore, Russell now heads into the final seven rounds needing a recovery beyond anything achieved by an eventual world champion at the same stage of a season.

Russell conceded after Sepang that it was now “exceptionally likely” his title hopes were over after what he expected to be a modest loss to Antonelli instead became an 18-point swing when his Mercedes stopped late in the race.

With seven grands prix and one sprint remaining, the championship remains mathematically open, but Russell has almost no margin for further setbacks.

Even if Russell won all seven remaining grands prix, Antonelli could finish third in each and still retain enough of his current advantage to become world champion, regardless of the result in the Singapore sprint.

But what does F1 history say about Russell’s chances of a comeback with seven rounds remaining?

‘You’ve almost got to laugh’: Russell rues latest blow to title hopes

Across F1’s 76 completed seasons, 74 have featured more than seven races and can therefore be compared with seven rounds remaining, with the seven-race championships of 1950 and 1955 excluded.

Of those 74 seasons, 23 eventual champions were behind in the standings with seven rounds remaining.

Only 12 of those drivers trailed by more than 10 points, while just five faced a deficit greater than 20.

Only twice has an eventual champion been more than 30 points behind at that point.

James Hunt trailed Niki Lauda by 35 points with seven races remaining in 1976 before eventually taking the championship by a single point, while Sebastian Vettel sat 39 points behind Fernando Alonso with seven rounds to go in 2012 before winning the title by three.

Neither comeback, however, offers a direct comparison with the task now facing Russell.

In 1976, a grand prix victory was worth nine points and only the top six scored, meaning Hunt’s 35-point deficit was equivalent to almost four race wins.

By 2012, the modern 25-point reward for victory was in place and points were available to the top 10, making Vettel’s 39-point gap worth less than two wins.

There were also extraordinary circumstances behind Hunt’s recovery.

Lauda missed two of the final seven races following his horrific crash at the Nurburgring and withdrew from the season-ending Japanese Grand Prix because of the dangerous conditions, leaving three of those remaining events in which he could not score.

Russell’s deficit is more than double either of those raw historical margins.

The most recent example of an eventual champion coming from behind with seven rounds remaining came only last season.

Lando Norris was 25 points behind McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri at that point in 2025, but reversed the position over the closing stretch to win the championship by 23 points, a 48-point swing across the final seven rounds.

There is another 2025 example, however, that may provide Russell with more encouragement, even though it did not end with the title.

Max Verstappen trailed then-championship leader Piastri by 69 points with seven rounds remaining, yet finished the season 13 points ahead of the Australian.

That represented an 82-point swing between the pair, only two points fewer than Russell now needs simply to draw level with Antonelli from his current deficit.

The difference is that Verstappen still fell two points short of Norris in the championship, underlining the scale of what Russell must achieve while also needing Antonelli to drop significant points.

The task is also slightly different to last season, when two sprint rounds remained with seven grands prix to run. This year, Singapore provides the only remaining sprint opportunity.

So while history says a comeback is possible from this point of a season, no champion across the 74 comparable F1 campaigns has recovered from a deficit this large with seven rounds remaining.

If Russell is to become world champion for the first time – and deny Antonelli the same feat – he will have to rewrite F1 history on a scale never seen before.

If George Russell is to win the championship in 2026, he’ll have to recreate a lot of history…

[573
64,63,817,813,816,3875,10115,945,7499,85
post-917817","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-formula-1","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-f1","tag-formula-1","tag-formula1","tag-george-russell","tag-kimi-antonelli","tag-mercedes","tag-slot4","tag-sports
["GET
