Remove items from your saved list<\/a> to add more.<\/p>\n AAA<\/p>\n Online clothing retailer ASOS is investigating a suspected cyber attack after customers received a mobile alert that appeared to threaten the company\u2019s IT department with a data release.<\/p>\n \u201cASOS HACKED,\u201d the headline of the notification read.<\/p>\n \u201cDear Asos DPO [data protection officer] and IT, we have fully compromised the Snowflake instance,\u201d the push notification said.<\/p>\n Snowflake is a cloud platform that allows companies to host, analyse and manage their data and is used by many major businesses including Canva, the New York Stock Exchange, Disney and OpenAI, according to its website.<\/p>\n A data protection officer is a position in companies tasked with safeguarding customers\u2019 information.<\/p>\n Related Article \u201cEngage with us, or we will leak it,\u201d the alert said.<\/p>\n It provided a Telegram link to a channel which then referred to other channels. At the time of writing, they each had only a few hundred subscribers.<\/p>\n In a statement, ASOS said it was investigating \u201cunauthorised activity involving third-party platforms\u201d used to communicate with customers, and had taken \u201cimmediate action to restrict access\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cBasic personal information including name and contact details may have been accessed,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n \u201cHowever, we do not believe that any payment-card information or account passwords have been impacted.\u201d<\/p>\n The London-headquartered ASOS has more than 17 million customers in more than 150 countries, and made $4.75 billion (\u00a32.5 billion) in revenue last year and an operating loss of almost $403 million (\u00a3212 million).<\/p>\n ASOS shares on the London Stock Exchange fell as much as 15 per cent on Tuesday.<\/p>\n UK law requires companies to report any personal data breaches within 72 hours after discovering a breach.<\/p>\n A spokesperson for Snowflake Inc. said it found no compromise of its platform. \u201cWe take customer privacy and security very seriously,\u201d they said in an emailed statement. \u201cThe investigation is ongoing, and we will provide further updates as soon as more information becomes available.\u201d<\/p>\n with Bloomberg<\/p>\n Be the first to know when major news happens.
