Untelevised team radio footage from the Bahrain Grand Prix has revealed the moment Lewis Hamilton<\/a> learned that Ferrari<\/a> had made a mistake by choosing dry tyres for the restart.<\/p>\n

Ferrari explained that its tyre choice was partly based on onboard footage of the safety car lapping the circuit during the delay.<\/p>\n

Hamilton finished third in Malaysia on Sunday as Red Bull driver Max Verstappen claimed his first win of the F1 2026 season.<\/p>\n

It marked the seven-time world champion\u2019s first podium finish since the British Grand Prix at Silverstone in early July.<\/p>\n

Hamilton\u2019s return to the podium came after he recovered from a Ferrari strategy error early in the race, which saw him and teammate Charles Leclerc restart on soft tyres on a wet track.<\/p>\n

Untelevised footage from Sepang has revealed the moment Hamilton clocked that cars around him \u2013 including Verstappen \u2013 had elected for intermediate tyres for the restart.<\/p>\n

An unnamed Ferrari engineer responded by insisting that the track was dry partly based on onboard footage of the safety car circulating ahead of the restart.<\/p>\n

The full exchange went as follows:<\/p>\n

Hamilton: \u201cMax is on inters.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ferrari: \u201cLewis, we see the track dry from the safety car onboard. You\u2019ll have a look for yourself when you go around.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hamilton: \u201cCars around me are on [different] tyres.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hamilton: \u201cIs Charles on the same tyre?\u201d<\/p>\n

Ferrari: \u201cConfirmed, Lewis.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the formation lap began, Hamilton quickly realised that the circuit was still too wet for dry tyres.<\/p>\n

With his race engineer, Carlo Santi, adamant that it would dry quickly, Hamilton requested a reduction in power to compensate for his reduced grip.<\/p>\n

Santi: \u201cTrack looks quite dry.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hamilton: \u201cThe track\u2019s still wet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Santi: \u201cOur information is dry from safety car line 1 onwards.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hamilton: \u201cThe track\u2019s still quite wet!\u201d<\/p>\n

Hamilton: \u201cThe track\u2019s really wet still. S**t.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hamilton: \u201cIt\u2019s so slippery, guys. It\u2019s dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n

Santi: \u201cWe need to survive the first couple of laps. It will dry up very soon.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hamilton: \u201cIt\u2019s still very wet, guys.\u201d<\/p>\n

Santi: \u201cCould be another lap behind the safety car. Try to warm the tyres.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hamilton: \u201cYeah, this track is still very wet, man.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hamilton: \u201cStaying on is going to be very hard.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hamilton: \u201cCan I turn down the power a little bit?\u201d<\/p>\n

Santi: \u201cGreen three, position two.\u201d<\/p>\n

Santi: \u201cWill be standing start on the end of this lap.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hamilton: \u201cThis track is not drying up for 10 laps.\u201d<\/p>\n

Santi: \u201cWill be a second-gear start.\u201d<\/p>\n

Santi: \u201cThree burnouts and a half. Three burnouts and a half. Pre-select green five. Second gear start and shallow drop.\u201d<\/p>\n

Santi: \u201cLast car is on the grid now.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the race began, Hamilton reported that the track was still not ready for dry tyres but remained hopeful that conditions would soon improve.<\/p>\n

Santi: \u201cTyres feedback.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hamilton: \u201cIt\u2019s pretty terrible for a moment, but it\u2019s gonna dry up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Santi: \u201cUnderstood. You\u2019re the first car on slick.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an exchange that did make Formula 1\u2019s world feed, Santi called for Hamilton to pit for intermediates a lap later.<\/p>\n

However, Hamilton remained insistent that the team had to stick with its original decision and brave it out.<\/p>\n

Valtteri Bottas\u2019s accident came to Hamilton\u2019s rescue a short time later, allowing him to make up the time he lost to the leading cars and mount his recovery to the podium.<\/p>\n

Santi: \u201cGreen two, position four. We are boxing for inters.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hamilton: \u201cIt\u2019s getting drier, tyres are starting to work a bit more. You think that\u2019s the smart thing to do?\u201d<\/p>\n

Santi: \u201cIf you want to stay out, we can gamble.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hamilton: \u201cStay out! You have to gamble! Now it\u2019s too late, you have to stay out!\u201d<\/p>\n
