The consequences of using a mobile phone in traffic are significant, according to the survey: 10 per cent of e-scooter users and 3.5 per cent of cyclists say they were involved in an accident caused by mobile phone use in the past year.<\/p>\n
Almost 20 per cent of e-scooter users and 10 per cent of cyclists say they have run a red light because they were using their phone. Around a quarter of e-scooter users say they have veered off the road or ridden against the flow of traffic.<\/p>\n
Using a mobile phone while driving is prohibited in Belgium for all road users. This applies not only to motorists but also to cyclists and e-scooter users.<\/p>\n
Awareness of the dangers is nevertheless high. Eight in ten respondents acknowledge that using a mobile phone while cycling or riding an e-scooter is dangerous and support a ban. Even so, one in five cyclists believes they can safely make a call while riding with their phone in their hand.<\/p>\n
There is also a striking gap in enforcement. For example, 74 per cent of cyclists think there is a high chance of being checked, while only 2 per cent say they actually received a fine in the past year.<\/p>\n
“Although the risk of seriously injuring someone is greater when car or lorry drivers use their phones while driving, using one while riding an e-scooter or cycling is also risky and is equally prohibited,” says Karin Genoe, CEO of Vias institute. “The fines are substantial for all road users: 202 euros if you are caught using your phone while driving, unless it is in a holder. Everyone on the road has a responsibility.”<\/p>\n
