Moderna, Eli Lilly, and other healthcare stocks rose Wednesday, while broader markets lost ground. <\/p>\n

Many of the biggest names in the sector will be reporting earnings in the coming weeks as the third-quarter earnings season kicks into gear. <\/p>\n

The healthcare sector stood out as one of the few bright spots in Wednesday’s trading. <\/p>\n

Moderna (MRNA) rose roughly 5% and Eli Lilly (LLY) added nearly 3% to rank among the day’s best-performing stocks in the S&P 500. Drugmakers Amgen (AMGN) and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) also climbed, along with Aetna parent CVS Health (CVS), at a time when stocks lost ground broadly<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The moves extend what’s been a strong run for the healthcare sector<\/a> this year amid optimism about advances in medicine<\/a>, growth opportunities from AI, and demographic shifts that could raise healthcare needs. <\/p>\n

In a note to clients late Tuesday, Morgan Stanley analysts raised their price target for Eli Lilly to $1,430 from $1,419, citing expectations of strong sales of the company’s weight-loss drugs. The analysts also highlighted bullish calls for Johnson & Johnson, Merck (MRK), and AbbVie (ABBV), among others. <\/p>\n

The analysts said they see upside from continued merger and acquisition activity in the sector, and suggested there is likely to be “limited impact” on healthcare policy from November’s midterm elections. <\/p>\n

Investors will get updates from many of the biggest names in the coming weeks as the third-quarter earnings season kicks into gear, led by UnitedHealth and Johnson & Johnson, which are scheduled to report ahead of next Tuesday’s opening bell. <\/p>\n
