Researchers say the findings could eventually inform treatments aimed at slowing age-related cellular decline in humans.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuzrrw2z00003b6rrai9epca@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Believed to be 194 years old, Jonathan is an Aldabra giant tortoise \u2014 a species native to the islands of Seychelles in the Indian Ocean \u2014 and he has spent most of his life on the remote South Atlantic island of St. Helena, a British Overseas Territory.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuzrrw2z00013b6r2qb47nog@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Giant tortoises are among the longest-lived land animals on Earth, with some records indicating they can regularly survive for more than a century. But Jonathan, approaching his 200th birthday, is an extreme example in this already special group.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuzrrw2z00023b6rfebyyn6n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One explanation for these animals\u2019 extended lifespan might be that they take life very slowly \u2014 even at the genetic level, according to a new study published Wednesday in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.adw8887\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">journal Science Advances<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuzrrw3000033b6r5l3q28b4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe assumption has always been that their metabolic rate is very low compared to us,\u201d said study coauthor Justin Gerlach, a fellow in biology at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. \u201cThat means that the processes that are going on inside the cells are slower, so there are fewer chemical reactions and therefore less damage to the cells and to the DNA.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuzrrw3000043b6rltiikxev@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Gerlach and his colleagues tested those assumptions by examining Jonathan\u2019s genome \u2014 the complete DNA set \u2014 as well as his epigenome, the switches that turn genes on and off. The researchers found 287 gene variants associated with protecting the animal from the inevitable cellular damage that comes with time.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuzrrw3000053b6rwopph6vl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHe does have some genes that are particularly good for DNA repair and reducing inflammation,\u201d said Gerlach, referring to two key mechanisms that are known to slow down aging processes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuzrrw3000063b6rwpgcg8fv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            More specifically, the analysis suggests that Jonathan can continue expressing the right genes at the right levels even in old age. This process typically starts to break down much earlier in most other animals, including humans, Gerlach said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/jonathan-left-and-david-credit-joe-hollins.jpg\" alt=\"Jonathan (left) with another giant tortoise named David.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1882\" width=\"2500\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuzrrw3000073b6r7pjkzye6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cOur cells start doing the wrong things and we get cancers, for example. But Jonathan has still got the genetic controls of a much younger animal,\u201d he added. \u201cWe don\u2019t know whether that\u2019s because he is exceptional, or whether actually that\u2019s what giant tortoises do. But it does mean that their bodies are much fitter than we would expect for their age, compared to what would happen with humans.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuzrrw3000083b6ryhyrzkpc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Other members of the animal kingdom, including species of whales, sharks and clams, are also known to reach older ages, but scientists know little about the genetic and molecular mechanisms that drive an animal\u2019s lifespan to be long or short, said Joao Pedro de Magalhaes, chair of molecular biogerontology at the UK\u2019s University of Birmingham, who was not involved with the study.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuzrrw3000093b6rdtmddbzz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cUnderstanding why some species live much longer than others would represent a major breakthrough in our understanding of ageing and longevity, with potential applications to human health,\u201d he added via email.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuzrrw30000b3b6r3v67ptwd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Jonathan\u2019s exact age is unknown. Scientists have estimated the great reptile is around age 194 based on a photograph from 1882 that depicts him in St. Helena already at adult size. Giant tortoises typically reach this size at about 50 years old, allowing researchers to deduce his current age from a photo taken 144 years ago.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuzrrw30000c3b6rezlmhvc8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Based on this estimate, St. Helena\u2019s governor in 2022 gave Jonathan an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/animal\/Jonathan-giant-tortoise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">official birthday<\/a> \u2014 December 4, 1832; Abraham Lincoln, Charles Darwin and Queen Victoria would have all been alive then and in their young age.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuzrrw30000d3b6r2lxgv7sy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, Jonathan could be even older \u2014 200 years old or more, according to Gerlach. The animal\u2019s arrival in St. Helena was likely because the public in the 1800s regarded giant tortoises as \u201ccuriosities,\u201d and as such he would have made for an interesting gift for a colonial administrator. This fate spared him from a far more gruesome one that was common for the species at the time. Crews on exploration vessels often captured the giant creatures and kept them as food supplies.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/jonathan-left-arrived-in-st-helena-in-1882-photographer-a-l-innes-image-in-the-public-domain.jpg\" alt=\"A photo taken in 1882 when Jonathan (left) arrived in St. Helena.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1500\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuzrrw30000e3b6rfpms08o7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe ships would collect tortoises from the Seychelles, the Gal\u00e1pagos or Mauritius, and they could keep them on board for months without bothering to feed them or give them water,\u201d Gerlach explained. \u201cThey\u2019d still be alive and edible. It was a grim practice that contributed to the extinction of the Mauritian species.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuzrrw30000f3b6rtk7peybx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Weighing about 400 pounds (180 kilograms), Jonathan is still active despite having lost his eyesight to cataracts. He is a popular tourist attraction, and earlier this year he was the subject of a viral April Fools\u2019 Day joke that wrongly claimed he had died, prompting the government of St. Helena to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sainthelena.gov.sh\/jonathan-the-tortoise-is-alive-and-well\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">confirm<\/a> he was still alive and well.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuzrrw30000g3b6rmm92sp0a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Due to the animal\u2019s old age and to avoid any risk of infection, the study authors collected DNA samples by swabbing his mouth, rather than drawing blood. The team noted that the saliva samples prevented the use of more accurate DNA sequencing techniques.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuzrrw30000h3b6rcv1pn5xl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The researchers compared Jonathan\u2019s DNA and epigenome with that of much younger members of his species found on the Aldabra Atoll of Seychelles and saw remarkable similarities. In addition, his mitochondria, the cell structures that produce energy, were in surprisingly optimal shape.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuzrrw30000i3b6rlbchcbvi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe don\u2019t yet know if this is common to his species, but one of our next goals is to analyze other Aldabra tortoises to find out,\u201d said senior study author Dr. Stephen Clark, the founder of Kallel Foundation, a Nashville-based nonprofit dedicated to increasing human longevity.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuzrrw30000j3b6r89qygu96@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere is some data showing that mitochondrial health is important for long-lived species, and it has been shown that human supercentenarians have more efficient mitochondria, so our results in Jonathan fit with these findings,\u201d Clark said in an email, referring to people who reach the age of 110 or more.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuzrrw30000k3b6rclokz9ig@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Jonathan\u2019s genome offers a map for cellular resilience that could translate into treatments for people, Clark added. \u201cWe are very interested in finding generic human drugs that improve mitochondrial health, and we want to bring these drugs into human clinical trials within the next year or two.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuzrrw31000m3b6r5c4n725l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            With a single animal, the new findings cannot tell researchers exactly why Jonathan has lived so long, and more giant tortoises and other long-lived species are needed to get a better picture of genetic drivers of longevity, according to Handan Melike D\u00f6nerta\u015f, an assistant professor and genomics researcher at the Middle East Technical University in Turkey. She was not involved with the study.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuzrrw31000n3b6r4yz2j3yj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBy comparing such extreme individuals with others, not only among humans such as centenarians, but also in other species, we can start to learn what makes them special, and with advances in medical technology we may find ways to apply what we learn,\u201d she said in an email.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuzrrw31000o3b6rfbrzpxkj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Jonathan is an ideal research subject for investigating genetic changes that may be linked to longer life, making the new study compelling, said Vincent J. Lynch, a professor in the department of biological sciences at the University at Buffalo in New York.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuzrrw31000p3b6r0zwe0liv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, some of the study\u2019s methods are prone to give false negative and false positive results, said Lynch, who was not involved with the work. \u201cWe\u2019ve developed computational methods to determine if mutations are adaptive, good or deleterious,\u201d he wrote in an email. \u201cBut these methods are very sensitive to assumptions we make about how genes evolve. The model they used, while common, makes unrealistic assumptions that can lead to good mutations being called bad and bad mutations being called good.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuzrrw31000q3b6rfmgdioff@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still, the study is a valuable complement to a growing body of research and further supports that giant tortoises are unique in their ability to defy expectations for lifespan and health, said Ylenia Chiari, an associate professor, faculty of Medicine &amp; Health Sciences, at the University of Nottingham in the UK. Chiari has also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yleniachiari.it\/publications.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">studied the longevity<\/a> of giant tortoise species in the Gal\u00e1pagos but was not involved in the recent work.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuzrrw31000r3b6rzj9w8stj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThese findings are beginning to unravel the complexity of the mechanisms that allow some organisms to achieve exceptional longevity,\u201d Chiari said in an email. \u201cUltimately, one of the goals of studying these and other exceptionally long-lived animals is to gain insights that may be transferable to human ageing and cancer research.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/editor-note\/instances\/cmuzkbjmn00013b6rb37yr8b0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"editor-note\" class=\"editor-note-elevate vossi-editor-note_elevate inline-placeholder\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n    Sign up for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/newsletters\/wonder-theory?source=nl-acq_article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CNN\u2019s Wonder Theory science newsletter<\/a>.
