Piastri was running in fourth place ahead of Norris, who decided to attempt an overtake on his McLaren teammate on the final lap of the 20-lap sprint race. <\/p>\n

Norris went down the inside at Turn 5 and Piastri didn\u2019t see him as Norris collided into his teammate, sending Piastri spinning off and ending his race. <\/p>\n
Norris was able to recover and finish eighth, but Piastri didn\u2019t and he trudged back to the pits.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I was either driver I would avoid Zak Brown for the best part of the day,\u201d commentator David Croft said on Kayo Sports.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cPiastri was pretty furious last year with his teammate Lando Norris, who he felt barged him out of the way in Turn 4. He is not going to be pleased with his teammate 12 months later.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMcLaren will be furious about that on the final lap of a sprint when they were fourth and fifth,\u201d Brundle said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt would have made no difference to the team whatsoever\u00a0(what order they finished in). The team will quite rightly be absolutely furious.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cPiastri got a bit locked up behind the Ferrari and Lando Norris goes down the inside. Piastri hasn\u2019t recognised that he\u2019s there, left him a bit of space. <\/p>\n
\u201cBut that was not smart Lando, that was not smart at all.\u00a0It kind of doesn\u2019t matter if it\u2019s your teammate. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe team will say it just wasn\u2019t worth the risk just to swap the two cars in a sprint. What was Oscar going to do?.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was a hell of a lunge, on your teammate at that point of the race,\u201d 2009 F1 world champion Jenson Button said. <\/p>\n
Norris apologised for the incident but suggested he was far enough alongside Piastri to attempt a passing move.<\/p>\n
\u201cSorry about that. Obviously I didn\u2019t want that to happen,\u201d the Brit said. <\/p>\n
\u201cI thought I was fully alongside. I just ran out for space at the apex but I was there.\u00a0We\u2019ll review it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Piastri did not look overly pleased but said: \u201cFrom where I sit, it\u2019s fourth and fifth for a sprint race. I\u2019m not that bothered either way. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s just a lot of work for the team now to get both cars fixed. Just a shame for the team.\u201d<\/p>\n
Pitlane reporter Ted Kravitz said: \u201cBoth Zak Brown and Andrea Stella have, let\u2019s put it delicately, declined to do any interviews at the moment, clearly furious both of them.\u201d<\/p>\n
The incident left McLaren\u2019s mechanics racing to repair damage on the rear end of the Australian\u2019s MCL40 before qualifying for the main race.<\/p>\n
Piastri added: \u201cI didn\u2019t see him at the at the apex. I looked behind into the corner and saw he was a reasonable way behind for a corner like that. <\/p>\n
\u201cBut I\u2019ll have a look – and the team can do what it needs to do. We looked okay in the middle part of the race, but the start and the end, it didn\u2019t wasn\u2019t great. So yeah, that\u2019s probably the biggest thing to look at.\u201d<\/p>\n
For his part, Norris said: \u201cThe pace was very strong. Obviously, just stuck the whole race. <\/p>\n
\u201cOn the last lap, there was a big opportunity into five, so I went for it. The gap closed a bit more than I would have liked, and obviously I\u2019ve had to back out of it because the gap was closing. <\/p>\n
\u201cSo I\u2019ve had to try and avoid the incident, and obviously there still was one. But that was a big gap, so I went for it. I have the right to do that. The rest we go review as a team…\u201d<\/p>\n
In its recap of Saturday\u2019s session, McLaren said: \u201cThe incident breached a very simple but fundamental principle of the team \u2013 two McLarens must never come together on track. <\/p>\n
\u201cThis was briefly discussed with the team after the Sprint before attention turned to qualifying.\u201d<\/p>\n
Norris again defended the move in an interview with a reporter from Dutch broadcaster Viaplay, who asked whether the passing attempt was \u201cunnecessary\u201d given the low stakes circumstances in the sprint. <\/p>\n
Reporter: \u201cOf course you want to finish as high as possible but it\u2019s also sprint and it\u2019s your teammate in front of you for four and five. Wasn\u2019t it too unnecessary, that move?\u201d<\/p>\n
