We acknowledge them, we thank them, and we honour them,” he said.

“Today, our nation expresses our respect and our gratitude to all who have served in our name. The fighters for peace, the keepers of peace.”

In a joint media release with Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles and Veterans Minister Matt Keogh, Mr Albanese said Operation Slipper had been “the beginning of a significant chapter in our nation’s military history”.

Deployment to Afghanistan would also go on to shape “a generation of Defence personnel, veterans and families”, he said.

“For many, service in Afghanistan often meant long periods away from loved ones, operating in dangerous and demanding environments, and working alongside coalition partners, Afghan forces and Australian government and non-government organisations,” he said.

“Today we honour all Australians – Navy, Army, Air Force and civilian – who served in Afghanistan and in the Middle East Area of Operations. We also recognise their families, friends and communities who carried the weight of that service alongside them.

“We remember all who died during or as a result of their service in Afghanistan, including the 47 ADF members currently listed on the Australian War Memorial’s Roll of Honour. We also recognise those who returned carrying visible and invisible wounds.

“A quarter of a century on, Australian service in Afghanistan forms part of our national story, marked by sacrifice, mateship, resilience and an enduring commitment to service.”

Also in attendance is SAS veteran and Coalition frontbencher Andrew Hastie, who testified in Mr Roberts-Smith ‘s defamation trial.

Mr Hastie lay a wreath opposite Mr Keogh, Nationals MP Michael McCormack, veteran and Herbert MP Phil Thompson, Mr Keogh, and Mr Marles.

Former prime ministers John Howard, Tony Abbott, Scott Morrison and Opposition leader Angus Taylor were also in attendance.

In a statement, Mr Taylor said his “thoughts and deep gratitude are with all those who served in Afghanistan, and especially with the families of those Australians who made the ultimate sacrifice”.

“ Your service made a difference. Your service made our nation and the world safer,” he said.

“Today is also a significant day for many Afghans who risked their lives to work with the Australians Defence Force and are now committed fellow Australians.

“My commitment to Australians is to keep out and root out Islamist extremism. We will protect our way of life.”

37 Australians died during service in Afghanistan.

They included Lance Corporal Stjepan Milosevic, Private Robert Poate, and Sapper James Martin, who were killed when an Afghan army sergeant, influenced by Taliban propaganda, opened fire on them while they were off-duty at a base in Uruzgan province.

The United States, with support from a broad coalition of allies, invaded Afghanistan to route the terrorist group al-Qaeda, as well as topple the extremist Taliban government, following the September 11 attacks.

However, despite more than two-decades of combat, infrastructure, and civilian activities – including by Australia – the capital Kabul again fell to the Taliban during the untied States’ hasty 2022 withdrawal.

Neither Australia nor the United States have diplomatic relations with the de facto Taliban regime, however, any change in power remains unlikely.

Mr Roberts-Smith’s bail conditions were varied earlier this year so he could attend the opening of the War Memorial’s multimillion-dollar new wing in June.

He did not attend due to illness.

The Department of Veterans’ Affairs will also release a coin to all attendees on Sunday.

Australia’s most
