Top-of-the range smart projectors offer a viable and impressive alternative to traditional TV screens, in that they provide large, scale immersive viewing opportunities, and the ability to roll them up and put them away when you’re not using them.

The new Hisense P1 Laser Portable Projector ($1,799) is one of the best I’ve tried, bringing premium entertainment to, well, anywhere.

I’ve been road-testing the revolutionary gadget for the past few weeks. Here’s how I got on.

When it comes to the specs of this thing, they are impressive by any standards.

If you’re looking for a projector that is both a genuine replacement for a TV screen and something that’s portable enough to take away with you, then you should look no further.

The all-new P1 Laser Projector brings Hisense’s premium laser technology into a compact, portable design built to deliver big-screen entertainment, wherever life takes you.

Think camping trips with the family, movie nights outdoors and a home cinema experience.

By combining premium picture with true everyday portability, the P1 can move effortlessly between spaces, to give Aussies the freedom to create a big-screen entertainment experience when and where they want it, without compromising on quality.

Powered by Hisense’s RGB Triple Colour Laser Technology, the P1 brings the colour performance of Hisense’s premium laser portfolio into a versatile unit, projecting images up to 150 inches with Full HD resolution and 1,000 ANSI lumens of brightness.

What this means is a crystal-clear picture and impressive audio, even underneath the night sky.

If you’re someone who wants to take this projector on the move, the built-in battery provides up to 2.5 hours of untethered viewing, making it easy to enjoy immersive entertainment across bedrooms, living areas and shared outdoor spaces without a permanent setup.

Optical zoom adapts the image to different spaces, while AutoMagic AI Adjusting 3.0 simplifies setup, helping customers spend less time configuring and more time enjoying their favourite content.

I’ve been road-testing the projector primarily at home, both in the garden for outdoor movie nights and in the living room when we want to watch something on the big screen.

The first thing that needs to be commented about with this projector is just how easy it was to set up.

From out of the box to the kids watching Toy Story genuinely took well under an hour, and that time was predominantly spent prepping the space for them to watch it.

The projector itself is neat, small and easily transportable. I would genuinely consider taking this away with me.

While there is a wire so you can have it plugged in at home, you can also do without if you’re camping or in the back garden — and you’ll definitely get the alotted 2.5 hours Hisense suggest you experience if it’s not plugged in.

I was incredibly impressed with the quality of the visuals of this projector.

It really feels like you’re inside whatever you’re watching, the colour is that crystal-clear.

The sound quality is also impressive. Whether you’re watching live sport or movies, this projector is built for bringing what you’re watching to life.

All you need to do is plug it in and the screen straightens up automatically, meaning no annoying slanted screens or picture not lining up fully.

I found it easy to pack up and pack down this projector depending on whether I wanted it out or not, and the quality easily rivalled TVs I own and have owned in the past.

While the device is obviously expensive at $1,799, it’s also cheaper than many high-end TVs and offers almost the same thing.

Overall, I would highly recommend the Hisense P1 to someone looking to dip their toes into the world of portable entertainment.

I think for families, particularly families who spend a lot of time either outdoors or camping, it’s a no brainer.

But it also works well for sports screening, bedtime movie sessions and all manner of other viewing experiences.

I have loved watching films under the stars with this projector, and it has really transformed the concept of ‘movie night’ for my young family and two girls.

I’m also looking forward to taking it away with us when we go on holiday in December for some more on-the-road adventures.

!["I’ve]("https://www.newsbeep.com/au/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/5d570c9d194a9d50d263b20553f227db89656d75-161x229-x134y0w4016h5712.jpg")
