The Gophers’ leading scorer from 2025-26 has rejoined the program, enrolled in classes and practiced with the team, but his eligibility remains unsettled.

Tyson’s case is part of a wider dispute over a new NCAA eligibility model and athletes who say they should receive a fifth season. A hearing in the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 13. The hearing could offer clues about the court’s view of the dispute, but it does not guarantee a ruling that day.

Why Tyson’s case matters to Minnesota

Tyson averaged 19.6 points per game last season and led Minnesota in scoring. If he is cleared to play, the Gophers would have an experienced scorer back in the lineup instead of needing to replace that production.

Gophers MBB doesn’t play a regular-season game this month, but October could be key to their 2026-27 outlook. —Cade Tyson’s eligibility —”Closed scrimmage” against Drake —Omaha exhibition —Creighton exhibition —Rotation clarity 5 things to monitor: https://t.co/Z9Ir6DpPho

— Tony Liebert (@TonyLiebert) October 8, 2026

His path has included four college seasons: two at Belmont, one at North Carolina and one at Minnesota. Tyson and other players from the 2022 recruiting class are seeking another year after using four seasons under the previous rules. The NCAA’s new model has not automatically resolved their cases, leaving athletes and teams waiting on court decisions.

That uncertainty makes Tuesday’s hearing important, but the result may not end the process. Eligibility cases around the country have produced different outcomes, and the court is considering an appeal related to an earlier order that temporarily allowed Tyson and other athletes to pursue another season.

MORE: Dana Altman’s sudden exit puts Oregon basketball’s season in a new light

Minnesota’s season starts before the case is settled

The Gophers are scheduled to play an exhibition against Omaha on Thursday, Oct. 15, and open the regular season Nov. 2 against North Dakota. Minnesota can continue preparing its rotations while Tyson practices, but the team’s plans could change significantly if his status shifts.

For fans, the case is easy to understand through one question: will Minnesota get another season from the player who led the team in scoring? Tuesday may bring a meaningful update.
