New details have emerged regarding Sony Pictures’ release plan for Sam Mendes’ four-film saga about The Beatles.

“The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event” will consist of an individual movie about each member of the band, with Mendes helming all of them. Production on the films is still underway, with the shoot hitting its 180th day this week.

Each of the films will unfold from the perspective of the individual band members, but how it’s presented is unclear – the band’s history is believed to be shown sequentially, with each film also focusing on a different period.

We do know the films have been targeting an April release, but those involved haven’t really commented on what the plan is. Appearing at the BFI London Film Festival’s Industry Forum on the weekend, Mendes’ producing partner Pippa Harris offered a brief update on the rollout:

“The idea at the moment is the films will come out in 2028, and we want people to be able to experience them in the cinema during the same period. That doesn’t necessarily mean we’re thinking that people will go and see all four films on the same day. But within the same month, you might see one a week, or you might see one on a weekend, two the next one.

However you see it, I think our hope is that people will see all four films. They stand alone as individual stories of each of those four men, but they have a cumulative power, which I think is greater than the sum of their parts. The Beatles are, I think, the greatest band in history, and we’re trying to do our best to do them justice. Hence the four films. I don’t think there’s probably another band that you could legitimately say you wanted to see four films for.”

The film stars Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Joseph Quinn as George Harrison and Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr.

Also starring will be Saoirse Ronan as Linda McCartney, James Norton as Brian Epstein, Mia McKenna-Bruce as Maureen Starkey, Anna Sawai as Yoko Ono, Aimee Lou Wood as Pattie Boyd, Harry Lloyd as George Martin, David Morrissey as Jim McCartney, Leanne Best as Mimi Smith, Bobby Schofiled as Neil Aspinall, Daniel Hoffmann-Gill as Mal Evens, Arthur Darvill as Derek Taylor, and Adam Pally as Allen Klein.
