A Current Affair, he said he had given the builders a $1 million budget, only for the cost of the renovation to balloon to about $1.6 million as invoices kept coming.

“I’m not the state government where I just keep f—— paying bills and paying bills,” he said.

He said he began questioning the billing and wanted to see evidence of approvals, along with the full payment schedule, before making any further payments.

Sandilands also suggested he had taken a chance on the builder.

“I did roll the dice on these guys. They weren’t really up to that sort of level, but maybe this is just a lesson for all of us. Maybe I should pay more attention and they should pay more attention,” he said.

Alter Build Co, which has been operating since mid-2024 and says it has a combined 20 years of experience in the construction industry, has so far declined to publicly detail its claim.

When contacted by A Current Affair, one of the company’s co-owners said the business would allow the court process to run its course.

For Sandilands, the legal fight is the latest setback tied to the Glenorie property.

After deciding the commute to the city was too much for him and his wife, the radio and television personality listed the home for sale with a price guide of $5.7 million to $5.9 million.

“Ugly as a hat full of arseholes”: Sandilands wasn’t a fan of the house pre renovation

The campaign has so far failed to deliver a result, with the property passing in at auction in May despite an $800,000 price cut.

Sandilands and his family have since moved into another recently renovated property in Sydney’s east.

Despite the court proceedings, Sandilands insists there is no bad blood with the builders.

“But I’m not against these guys. They were very nice and I think they had the best intentions,” he said.

“If I’m in the wrong, I’m happy to pay but if I’m not then I’m not paying.”
