October 12, 2026<\/a>Ariel Helwani’s blunt take on Sean Strickland’s UFC pay dispute<\/p>\nRecently, in an episode of The Ariel Helwani Show, Ariel Helwani admitted that Strickland may be underpaid but said the UFC middleweight champion had agreed to his current terms. He pointed out that Strickland signed the deal, secured a title opportunity, won the belt, and still has five fights remaining on the contract.<\/p>\n
“I don’t blame Strickland at all for being upset because he is underpaid. I think all fighters should be paid more, but at the end of the day, he signed that deal. That’s why I have little sympathy here. You agreed to terms, you signed that contract and secured that title shot, won the fight fair and square, and now you’ve got five fights left. You’ve got to deal with it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Helwani argued that the UFC’s structure gives the promotion overwhelming leverage. Fighters cannot simply demand a new deal after one victory, leave at will, or receive a direct share of company revenue. He added that there is no collective bargaining framework comparable to those in major North American sports leagues.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou can’t demand a renegotiation. You can’t leave after one win. You don’t get a cut of the pie. There’s no revenue sharing. There’s no collective bargaining. … I agree with a lot of what he’s saying about fighter pay, but I have a hard time sympathising with him over the contract situation.”<\/p>\n

Sean Strickland responded on X with a sharply personal attack. “Let me tell you… Ariel has been my biggest hater since I stopped supporting Israel. Listen man, you wanna c**k, that’s on you. At least don’t bring it into journalism… But let’s be honest, most journalists c**k for Israel.”<\/p>\n
He also wrote on X, \u201cYou’re the most biased weak man on the internet.\u201d<\/p>\n
The 34-year-old has been increasingly vocal about UFC compensation, arguing that fighters receive only a fraction of the money generated by the promotion. He has referenced Conor McGregor’s reported $30 million payday as proof of the gap between elite boxing-level earnings and UFC fighter pay.<\/p>\n
Strickland has also threatened to vacate his middleweight title. Fight out his remaining UFC contract and pursue a boxing match with Jake Paul. He has said he rejected a year-end title defence against Nassourdine Imavov because the financial offer did not meet his expectations.<\/p>\n
At present, the fighter is publicly refusing to commit to his next UFC appearance. The standoff has become both a contract battle and a fresh flashpoint in the sport’s continuing argument over fighter pay.<\/p>\n
