Gary Hurley needs at least a top-10 finish to earn a last gasp passage to the HotelPlanner Tour Grand Final at the end of the month as he tees it up in the Hangzhou Open.

The top-45 in the Road to Mallorca Rankings will qualify for the Grand Final upon the conclusion of this tournament with Hurley very much on the outside looking in at 61st in the standings. A damaging missed cut saw him fall from 55th after a second round 81.

Considering Hurley is competing full time this season after taking a year out as he battles Parsonage Turner Syndrome, qualifying for the top-70 for the two Chinese events and being in a position to make it to the Grand Final is a fine campaign in itself. The West Waterford man was unsure if he would be able to play golf again when he was struck down by the rare neurological condition last year but three top-10s and two top-20s show signs that his golf game is heading in the right direction.

“I feel like my game is in a good place and my mindset is in a good place with it,” said the 33-year-old. “I’d love to make the Grand Final. Four weeks ago I wasn’t sure if I was going to get into China. So I did well with one top-10 and a couple of top-20s to put myself into position.

“I’m still working at 40% but I have no pain. My golf is slowly starting to improve.

“China is one and a half points and I feel my game is in a good place. I can’t control that I can’t control what other guys do. If I get into the right place mentally and allow myself to access the skills that I have it should be a good week.”

Meanwhile, Liam Nolan’s place at the Grand Final is secure and he can all but seal his promotion to the DP World Tour with another strong performance here.

Last week, he backed up his maiden professional victory with a top-5 finish to move from 12th to 9th in the Road to Mallorca Rankings as he pulled further away from the top-15 bubble.

Fifteen DP World Tour cards will be given to players after the Grand Final.
