Anne Aly has condemned as \u201cracist\u201d and \u201cmisogynistic\u201d comments in parliament calling for her to be \u201cstoned in the square\u201d \u2013 while revealing she has received 19 death threats in the past week alone.<\/p>\n

The Gold Coast Liberal National MP Angie Bell, the member for Moncrieff, told the House of Representatives that Aly, the small business minister, and the prime minister should be \u201cshamed and stoned in the square\u201d over a decision made by the tax office.<\/p>\n

Bell was forced to withdraw the comment by the speaker.<\/p>\n

On Instagram, Aly responded with an emotive post-to-camera, saying she had been the subject of consistent death threats, including previous threats that she should be stoned.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t usually comment about these sorts of things, but I feel like I have to. This past week alone, I\u2019ve had 19 death threats on my social media. And in the past I\u2019ve had death threats that are couched in that exact same language: stone her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aly said that the comments directed at her were not just unparliamentary, but fundamentally inimical to Australian values.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are a country that proudly stands against violence against women and against regimes that use brutal methods like stoning against women.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not just something that we should just turn away from.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is racist. It is misogynistic. And it is something that should never have been said.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bell made the remarks before question time on Tuesday as part of an opposition attack on the government over the Australian Taxation Office\u2019s decision to ban credit card payments<\/a> used to pay tax bills.<\/p>\n

Bell said millions of Australians were employed by small businesses, and would be harmed by the decision.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis minister and this prime minister should be absolutely shamed and stoned in the square,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Bell was forced by the speaker to withdraw the comments after the government\u2019s leader of the house, Tony Burke, raised concerns with what he said was \u201cphysically violent imagery\u201d.<\/p>\n

Australia \u2013 like other liberal democracies \u2013 has experienced a dramatic rise in threats<\/a> against politicians and other public figures.<\/p>\n

More than 50 police reports on a range of alleged criminal offences were made during the last federal election campaign and the Australian federal police received 951 referrals or threats against parliamentarians in the 2024-25 financial year, an increase of more than 60% in just four years.<\/p>\n

Last year, the then AFP commissioner, Reece Kershaw, told Senate estimates that female politicians were particular targets, and that \u201cthe nature of threats and comments directed at female parliamentarians and high officeholders is particularly troubling, with a common feature being offensive material centred on derogatory language about their appearance\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome of this material also contains extremely violent themes, including threats of graphic, sexual violence,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese threats, which are being made online or are being sent in the post or over the phone, are sometimes also directed at their children.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kershaw said politicians were targeted because of their public profiles, or because of their policy positions.<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, in some cases, it appears male offenders are targeting women because they are women.
