Meta on Thursday launched a new open-weight AI model which it claims rivals, and in some cases outperforms, similar products from leading Chinese developers.<\/p>\n
Muse Spark Open \u201cis the most capable US open-weight model to date,\u201d Meta\u2019s chief of AI Alexandr Wang wrote on X.<\/p>\n
Unlike so-called closed models \u2013 such as Anthropic\u2019s Claude or OpenAI\u2019s ChatGPT \u2013 developers can download the parameters, known as weights and biases, of an open-weight model and modify them.<\/p>\n
Chinese developers have emerged as dominant players in the open-weight market for AI models over the past couple of years.<\/p>\n
Alibaba\u2019s Qwen, Moonshot AI\u2019s Kimi K3 and Z.ai\u2019s GLM models have been considered open-weight frontrunners globally, but Meta claims its new open model now competes on a similar level.<\/p>\n
\u201cBuilt for coding and agentic work,\u201d Muse Spark Open \u201cexcels at long-horizon tasks, complex software engineering, and multi-step reasoning,\u201d Meta said in a blogpost, adding that \u201cstrong safeguards\u201d have been integrated into the new model.<\/p>\n
Muse Spark Open is also \u201coptimized\u201d to run on Apple\u2019s advanced M5 Ultra chips, Meta said, signaling an unusual partnership between the two tech companies.<\/p>\n
Muse Spark Open requires significant computing power. Users can run the model on two Mac Studios with M5 Ultra chips to create a \u201csupercomputer\u201d on their own desktop, Meta said.<\/p>\n
The launch comes just days after Meta announced its newest closed model, which it said rivalled the most advanced versions of ChatGPT and Claude.<\/p>\n
