EXCLUSIVE: Kristen Bell is in the midst of a trajectory that defies the typical Hollywood playbook. <\/p>\n

At 46, the Los Angeles-based actor appears not to take herself too seriously in her public life; after all, she declares on her Instagram bio, \u201cI\u2019m here for the whimsy.\u201d <\/p>\n

Yet, when Bell speaks to Stellar from Paris, she reveals a depth beneath the humour. <\/p>\n

The mega-success of Netflix\u2019s Nobody Wants This \u2013 the Erin Foster-created romantic comedy series in which Bell co-stars with Adam Brody and has earned her multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nominations \u2013 is simply proof, she says, that the most compelling Hollywood romances can belong to those who have already lived a little. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not the youngest rom-com cast ever to hit the screen,\u201d Bell points out to Stellar. <\/p>\n

\u201cI think that had more of an impact than we foresaw. I have so many friends who are on dating apps and in their late 30s and 40s. Life in my generation started [later]. <\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Adulting\u2019 has been pushed off until your 30s and 40s, and that wasn\u2019t how it was with previous generations.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been 22 years since the Detroit, Michigan-raised actor achieved fame as the titular teen detective in cult TV series Veronica Mars. <\/p>\n

Navigating Hollywood on her own terms, Bell has come to embrace what people loved about her breakthrough performance: her wit and sensitivity. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt took me a very long time to learn this,\u201d she says, but she is happy now \u201cstaying in my lane. And I don\u2019t mean that to minimise my abilities. <\/p>\n

\u201cI mean it because I spent so many years in a pattern of mimesis with other people, wanting what they wanted, or because I was told to want it. <\/p>\n

\u201cPeople could categorise me as \u2018quirkier\u2019 than your normal run-of-the-mill actress, and that\u2019s OK. I\u2019ve searched for quirky roles where I can bring out a little bit more of my own personality. <\/p>\n

\u201cI guess what I mean by \u2018staying in my lane\u2019 is trusting myself. And not just wanting to sign onto a project because it\u2019s currently the sought-after project in my business. Really deciding [how] I want to spend my time.\u201d <\/p>\n

In Nobody Wants This, a premise loosely based on Foster\u2019s own life, Bell plays Joanne, an agnostic sex and relationships podcast co-host who ends up dating Noah (Brody), a rabbi. <\/p>\n

As the third season returns Thursday, Bell muses about the serious subject matter behind the comedy. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe show is written from a very specific perspective to show the messy, vulnerability of merging two completely different lives,\u201d she explains. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe circumstances could be whatever you want: ethnicity, religion, socio-economic backgrounds, belief systems, interests. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhat does it look like to merge two completely different lives when the people have chemistry and connection and a willingness to try? <\/p>\n

\u201c[It] doesn\u2019t show fake or silly TV misunderstandings; they face genuine, deeply felt roadblocks in their life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Behind the camera, Bell \u2013 who shares daughters Delta, 11, and Lincoln, 13, with her husband, actor Dax Shepard \u2013 is also an executive producer on the series, and takes her role as a mentor seriously. <\/p>\n

\u201cI always think of the Gloria Steinem quote, \u2018Help the women coming behind you get through the door a little easier than you did,\u2019\u201d Bell says, paraphrasing the late feminist icon. \u201c[Steinem] emphasised looking behind you \u2013 know who else is in the room or trying to get into the room \u2013 to really put the emphasis on mentorship and sisterhood and basic human decency. <\/p>\n

\u201cSo I think about that a lot when I see other women in my line of work or other women, and make sure that I\u2019m thinking about their state of being as well as my own.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018I LIKE TO FEEL LIKE MYSELF\u2019<\/p>\n

On the day of Stellar\u2019s interview, Bell is at Paris Fashion Week fulfilling duties in her new role as a L\u2019Or\u00e9al Paris global ambassador, though she remains understated amid the whirlwind of haute couture front rows and runways. <\/p>\n

For Bell, navigating the event means maintaining a minimalist approach to red carpet beauty. \u201cI like to feel like myself,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve tried a lot of different looks throughout the years. But I feel best when I just look awake \u2013 happy to be there and awake \u2013 which certainly involves a blowout and a face of make-up. <\/p>\n

\u201cA natural look is what I favour.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stepping out of her comfort zone, Bell made her runway debut alongside Kendall Jenner, Cara Delevingne and Mika Abdalla in the brand\u2019s Le D\u00e9fil\u00e9 show, which honours women driving positive change. <\/p>\n

Strutting on a catwalk was an intimidating prospect for the actor, who relied on some unexpected lessons from her daughters to prepare. <\/p>\n

\u201cMa\u2019am, my goal is to make it to the end and back,\u201d Bell cracks. <\/p>\n

\u201cI have never walked a runway before. My daughters have given me quite a bit of coaching. They playfully runway walk at school with their friends. <\/p>\n

\u201cSo I\u2019m about six weeks \u2026 into my training with them. But I\u2019m not quite sure I\u2019m going to have the moxie to give it as much hip as they do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Modelling for L\u2019Or\u00e9al Paris, Bell says, felt like a deeply personal, full-circle moment. <\/p>\n

\u201cMy relationship with make-up has changed because when I was younger, I was trying things that I thought I was supposed to try,\u201d she reflects. <\/p>\n

\u201cThings that might not fit. It took me a while to understand what I actually liked. <\/p>\n

\u201cI used to think that [self-confidence] was something that was received or given to you. <\/p>\n

\u201cNow I understand that worth is a realisation. And it\u2019s internal. The only person that can give you your worth is yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n
